| | Twohy email to Aint It Cool It's days like this that make my black fanboy heart pulse with malevolent glee. David Twohy emailed Harry at Aint It Cool News to give a general vibe for what they are trying to do with the future Pitch Black movies. Make sure to hit the link above to read the entire piece, as it is very informative and exciting and also shrewd in it's tapping into the general gestalt around the current Star Wars movies. Looks like they might still be calling the movie Chronicles of Riddick, too.I pitched a franchise that would be “the evil twin of ‘Star Wars’.” And they got it immediately. Instead of cold technology on parade, “Chronicles” will be a hot-blooded affair that marches to the tune of corruption, defiance, chaos. It won’t be so much a horror film (as some thought “Pitch Black” to be) as a dark action-adventure movie with our own brand of epic mythology.
Oh, did I mention "dark"? The email also goes on to confirm what has been mentioned before, in that the Aint It Cool website played a big part in bringing a ton of attention to the original Pitch Black.Again, thanks to “Ain’t It Cool News.” We remember how “Pitch Black” had virtually zero awareness a month before its release - and then along came your review. That kick-started a lot of good web-buzz for us. Little did we dream it would lead to this. Thanks to Kriszta at Vin Xperience and also FlixSide.com.
Ken Wheat regarding Aint It Cool News Since Twohy gave props to Aint It Cool today (in the news item above), I figured it was a good time to mention that original Pitch Black screenwriter Ken Wheat had a few good things to say about the site and it's owner, Harry Knowles, too.For anyone who wonders why I would be spending my few minutes out of the cave defending Harry, the reason is simple. Harry's love ofmovies led him to a tiny screening room a couple of years ago, where he and his associate "Moriarty" sat alone in the dark and watched a smallish genre film that was falling between the cracks. The company that produced it had been sold, and the new distributor wasn't jumping up and down about it. (Direct to video, anyone?) Most folks around town, if they knew of it at all, had already pegged it as a loser.
Harry and Moriarty loved it, wrote about it, and opened eyes. Of fans, and of people within the industry. Suddenly, the distributor started wondering if they'd figured the damned thing wrong. They began promoting it, and ended up giving it a decent release. It made them some solid bucks, and turned its lead into a big star.
Harry didn't get behind Pitch Black because the Masters of Hollywood were manipulating him. He didn't do it because somebody let him slip into a screening room and see it before the rest of the world. He did it because he stumbled upon this foundering film, it clicked for him, and he thought other movie fans should be given a chance to share his enthusiasm.
| | | PB2 Promo info Spotted a neato tidbit on the way-too-cool Coming Attractions... Some Universal reps were handing out the following piece of promo art for the Pitch Black sequel. Guess the current thinking is that the movie is called RIDDICK: Pitch Black 2. Works for me.

| | | Twohy it is! Great news for anyone that enjoyed Pitch Black... the original director of the film, David Twohy, is now officially set to direct the sequel! In fact, sequels. I first spotted this story on ComingSoon.net, and naturally Kriszta over at VinXperience has the whole piece from Variety. Hit either of those two links for quotes, but the basic gist is:- The studio passed on Hayter and Goldsman's scripts for TCOR, and will go with Twohy's instead
- The general plan is for three sequels, depending on Diesel's bankability
- Twohy has committed to all three films as director and writer
- The goal is for a franchise
- "Multiple adversaries on different levels"
What's unknown is whether the sequel will now follow the general idea of following events prior to what happened in Pitch Black. Twohy's original pitch predates Hayter's and Goldsman's, which presumably is where the idea for a prequel came about. Time will tell.
Sequel slightly delayed Kriszta and The Vancouver Sun sent word that principal photography for Pitch Black 2 or whatever it's going to end up being called has been pushed back. The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black 2, due to shoot here in June, was pushed to August and now is scheduled for an October start. Vin Diesel stars.
| | | Pitch Black FAQ Finally got around to searching a couple messageboards and building up a Frequently Asked Questions section for Pitch Black. Like it says, it's not an exhaustively detailed collection of everything... just the stuff people seem to wonder about the most. And yes...the Predators killed Frye, not Riddick
Still on track A couple news items relating to Vin Diesel recently all point to the fact that he definitely seems to be planning on doing The Chronicles of Riddick next. He's out of TFATF2, and XXX probably needs to come out before he can start working on XXX2 (for $20 Million bones, for chrissake!), so TCOR it is.
So even though we don't know anything about a director, or who's working on the preproduction parts like concept art and storyboars and all that, or just what the hell Ja Rule is ever talking about.. the movie is still on.
| | | Site Launch Welcome to Pitcher Blacker, the newest planet in the M-344/G system. I've got a bunch of different stuff for both Pitch Black and it's upcoming sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick. This site is going to be focused for the most part on feature content relating to the production of the movies... and to begin with, I've got a couple interesting things you should check out.
The Wheat Script FAQ: As some of you may have noticed, Jim and Ken Wheat wrote the story and screenplay (later adapted by David Twohy). While this script has never been released to the public, I did find some interesting information about it. Click the link to check all this out.
Concepts: I was lucky enough to get in touch with Tim Lawrence, who worked with Twohy on the preliminary concept art for the production. Tim was nice enough to send over a bunch of images that have never been seen, that give very interesting glimpses into the ideas that evolved into what you see in the movie.
Enjoy, be sure to stop back in once in a while for continuing news coverage on the new movie, and email me feedback.
A-List talent Turns out that the full Variety story, by way of Yahoo, about VD's recent hijinks has a few extra TCOR tidbits.Universal and Diesel are still all-systems-go on "Chronicles of Riddick." Universal has brought in Oscar-winning "A Beautiful Mind" screenwriter Akiva Goldsman to do a rewrite and will seek A-list talent to shoot the film later this year. Not sure if David Twohy, Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, and Keith David count as A-list, but they still managed to make a kickass movie...
| | | Akiva Goldsman yes, plus location stuff According to The Hollywood Reporter, via Coming Attraction's Pitch Black 2 page, Akiva Goldsman actually is doing a rewrite of The Chronicles of Riddick.
Check out the link above for some fun scoops on location and shooting dates.
VD out of TFAFT2 for TCOR The mighty VinXperience and their super-messageboard picked up from Variety that Vin Diesel is out of The Fast and the Furious 2 so he can concentrate on The Chronicles of Riddick.
