New shot of Necro trooper figure
The San Diego Comic Convention is on it's way (July 22-25), which means so is the Necromonger Trooper figure that SOTA will be selling exclusively there and on their website. To whet your appetite, they've sent along a new image of the figure which will be a limited run of 1500 pieces, retailing for $15 each (limited to 3 per person). Click the thumbnail below for the full deal.

BUTCHER BAY giveaway
Here's another chance to win a copy of ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY along with a new Xbox, courtesy of SciFi.com. The contest ends July 4th, so make with the clicking. Note that it requires you to sign up as a SciFi.com member (which is free).

'Vote' for the TCOR DVD on Amazon
Thanks to Jeremy for pointing out this TCOR DVD preorder page where you can enter your email address to be informed when the DVD goes on sale. By entering in your address you help establish a rank for the product, which is certainly a good way to show your interest in the franchise as a whole. I'm willing to bet the DVD sales will be scrutinized closely.

Shine Job contacts to return!
Good news for the ten billion people that have been emailing me over the years... The word from one of the people at Lensquest is that there has been enough interest in contacts like Riddick's that they are going to make some more. The lenses are called "Shine Job" and will only be available for a limited time. Release date and cost is unknown at this time, so if you want some of these then I suggest you hit the link and email them to show your interest. Thanks to Kristen for getting me in touch with the right people.

Script review of Hayter's draft
Kudos to VX for spotting this article on UGO that takes a look at one of the early drafts for THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, written by David Hayter. The story sounds pretty dire, although it would have been nice to have some criticism of the dialogue, etc also.
The script isn't exactly a carbon-copy of Aliens - in fact the entire first act is quite different, as Guerin recruits Kira and they go in search of Riddick, only to find him fighting "hammerheads" for entertainment in the New Chicago Underground.

New trading card: Costume Card
Here's an interesting thing I happened upon at the website for Rittenhouse Archives, the guys making the TCOR and PB trading cards.... a new product. This one is called the "Vin Diesel Costume Card", and features a shot of Riddick along with a piece of one of the black tank tops that Vin wore in the movie. This is a limited edition item, only 600 made, and is due July 7th of this year. They're selling it for fourty bucks.

Free Riddick trading card
Most of you have probably been paying more attention than I have, but just in case... while poking around the Rittenhouse site for today's updates, I noticed that they have a thing setup so you can get a free Riddick trading card sample. Make sure you read their regulations.

Obtaining Figures
Those of you looking to get your grope on with a poor defenseless Kyra action figure might have been having trouble finding one, and I've found out why. SOTA pointed out that there was a "strange delay" with the shipping company, which is why more people haven't seen them on shelves. And as far as availability, in addition to their own site once their shipment comes in, SOTA gave me a list of other places that carry them: Cards testimonial
Linda passed along a good experience she had buying a Vin signature trading card from K&J Nonsports Cards (800-581-9097), and I thought some of the details were interesting.
  • The Vin sig was $150
  • There were only 100 Vin autos made
  • K&J will make any set you want
  • K&J will sell single cards
  • K&J included a basic set with Linda's Vin sig
Sounds like the place to go.

Official site totally updated
The last bits of goodness have made it up on TheChroniclesofRiddick.com, to the tune of four storyboard sequences, concept art (weapons, vehicles, and environments), new video interviews (like thirty of the damn things), and clips (both of the movie and on set). This is actually a MASSIVE update with a metric shitload of great new stuff, so snag it all.

PB DVD in EW charts
According to the DVD sales charts in the latest Entertainment Weekly, good ol' PITCH BLACK hit #5 it's first week back on shelves. The masses love their shiny cardboard slipcovers, God love 'em.

New Figure Dates
Just a quick one to point out newish dates for the remaining figures... The Riddick/Hellhound box set is expected at Musicland stores mid-July and the Necro troopers should show up for sale on SOTA's site in August. Plastic pals that are fun to be with!

The Plot Thickens
Those of us on the outside can never really know what it will take to make more Riddick movies, but an $8M second weekend can't help. This stupifyingly low number probably indicates the end of any further significant box office activity for TCOR domestically. International releases will occur sporadically over the next few months, but will foreign theaters be in a rush to book something that underperformed in the U.S.? And how well do DVDs sell for box office disappointments? Consult your own Quasi-Dead since I have no idea.

Since the movie sequel chances look bleak, I'm curious about the future of the franchise as a whole. The PITCH BLACK DVD charted damn well for a re-release with weak features and no audio/video improvements. Things most not be too bright for the figures since plans for a second series and vehicles have been put on hold. The game was released to impossibly unanimous praise and great press, but did it actually sell ? The signed trading cards appear to be doing brisk business on ebay. People love DARK FURY. So... How will things play out? Will Universal release anything else to tap into the fanbase that obviously exists? Twohy has two more movies worth of stories to tell. How about C2, but in game form? Tell me what you think.

PBer down but not out
Just a quick note to whatever readers remain after TCOR's punishing second weekend... the recent slowdowns to the site have been due purely to a lack of time on my part. For extra excitement I got sick this weekend. So things have been slow, but I expect they'll pick up again soon. Got a bunch of stuff cooking, such as a visual guide to what was cut from the movie, a massive update to the Universe section, and much more. Hang in there, and if I haven't answered your email yet then please have patience. Thanks!

Peter Chung/DARK FURY interview
Thanks to Scott Essman for conducting a nicely thorough interview with Peter Chung, director of the recently released DARK FURY. Take a gander through this long talk with this long time badass animator.

This weekend = last chance
If you never read any of the Twohy interviews, then you missed where he said that Universal will decide whether to do the next CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK movie once they see how this first one performs after its first two weekends. That means this coming weekend (which starts on Fridays, for movies) is the last chance for fans to mobilize and get tickets sold. So if you've seen the movie already and liked it, or if you haven't had the chance yet but want to, or if you loved BUTCHER BAY and want to increase the chances of another game being made, or if you want Del Rey to pay someone to write another TCOR book, or if you want a PITCH BLACK DVD that has actual extras relating to the making of PITCH BLACK, whatever your interest in the franchise... this is it. Starting tomorrow, it's the last three days we have to make a difference. Go see the movie. Get your friends to go see the movie. Get your family to go see the movie. Light up every messageboard that you participate on to remind people to go see the movie. Buy or rent DARK FURY. Buy or rent ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY. Get out there.

TCOR Continuity Photos
Thought this was a pretty cool little find. Click this link to see eleven continuity photos from THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. These shots show the actors standing around the sets, mostly, and were used to help keep track of props and stuff in between takes and sequences filmed. Like OMG you can see Vin Diesel! Go now!

Props for auction
If you've managed to save a little bit of cash after buying all this stuff they've been tossing at us for TCOR, then this will probably make you drool uncontrollably... TCOR props on Ebay!. You name it, they have it... Riddicks' backpack and knives, a Necromonger pistol, a Crematoria cell key, blocks of UDs, photos, a complete set of storyboards (OMFG), call sheets, and on and on. There is a ton of stuff. The auctions start closing tomorrow, so as always your best bet is probably to wait until the last minute, heh. Credit goes out to Superchick at AOVD, and also waimeawahine (another super chick) who posted on VX, which is run by Kriszta (yet another super chick).

BUTCHER BAY climbs rental charts
Thumbs up to the Starbreeze, Tigon, VUG, and Uni crew... Just spotted these charts that show that ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY has moved to a better spot in the rental charts, from #8 last week to #4 this week.

New huge DARK FURY character pics
Thanks to Universal Home Video for passing along some really nice, huge resolution images of the main characters from DARK FURY. Click on the DARK FURY media link to check 'em out.

No Series 2 for figures
While hunting around to find out who exactly will be selling the Necromonger trooper figures (answer: only through SOTA's site & at the San Diego Comic Con whenever the figures come in from China), I spotted the following ominous post from one of the SOTA guys at Action-Figures.com:
Whoever you talked to is incorrect about there being a second series. I'll leave it at that.
This doesn't bode well for the vehicles & ships license SOTA has either. I'll be pretty bummed if I never get a Conquest Icon statue for my desk...

Warning: DARK FURY totally rocks
Look, I'm not an anime guy, and neither am I much into regular animated features, but I enjoyed the hell out of DARK FURY. I can EASILY give it the highest recommendation to fans of this franchise. The voice acting was great, with a special nod to Keith 'MFing' David, and visually it was quite beautiful (especially during the fight with the Shirill). And while I had quibbles with some of the story logic (why would the Mercs care about Riddick's bounty when they all work for Chillingsworth and therefore must know he's destined to be painted blue and put on a pedestal?), the characters were interesting when they needed to be and the action setpieces were way out there. Hell, even the special features were much better than what came on the PITCH BLACK DVD re-release. It's only ten bucks at most places... buy it!

BruceL's TCOR review?
Gotten a handful of emails on this particular topic (which equates to 952% more emails than I usually get, c'mon you people feedback is my only payment), and I just wanted to quickly address it. I'm on the fence about whether I'll do a long, detailed one, which is really what I'd like. My free time is painfully tight so the problem is simply that it's unlikely that I'll ever have the time to do the actual typing.

A short version would praise the visuals, rave about the character of Riddick, and grumble about all the illogical stuff done because it's more cinematic (just like another little movie who's initials are PB...). The latter issues ticked me off quite a bit the first time I saw it, but the second time was great as I just sat back and enjoyed the ride. Riddick was the highlight, though. Great character.

DARK FURY released today
Big day today, as the animated bridge between THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK and PITCH BLACK is released to DVD. This 35 minute film with a story by David Twohy and directed by Peter Chung should be interesting.... it shows what happens when Imam, Jack, and Riddick are captured by a ship owned by a woman who considers murderers to be 'art', and as an added bonus introduces us to Toombs. There are also some nice extras on the making of this and also TCOR. Been seeing good things popping up on forums, so I've got my fingers crossed. VX pointed me towards a pretty positive review up on Coming Soon. Make sure to click the links on the PitcherBlacker left menu to get more goods.

TCOR Soundtrack review & samples
Well, seeing the movie convinced me to buy the soundtrack, but I spotted this review by a writer who apparently doesn't feel the same way. He makes some interesting points so give the article a look, but the most interesting part is the collection of sample tracks, heh. You can also snag a couple samples over on the record label page too. Anyone else think it's funny that at least one track is named after a scene that was cut from the movie?

     June 14th, 2004
Tigon Games interview
Spotted there's an interview up on Gamespot with Cos Lazouras, honcho at Vin's game company Tigon Games and as far as I can tell the only other employee, heh.
The reception to the game has been phenomenal from a consumer, press, and retailer standpoint. Retailers, obviously, got to see earlier versions of the game and they were excited about the ambitiousness of what we were all trying to achieve. Gamers have really embraced the final product and nothing beats reading rave reviews from actual players. Although our expectations were very high from the outset, with all concerned aiming to disprove the adage that movie based games could not be triple A, the final result has even surpassed the bar that was set.

TCOR Editor on IMDB boards
Assuming that this is legit, one of the movie film editors Tracy Adams hit the IMDB message boards to toss out a quick comment regarding the film. Here's the entire quote.
I would like to say thank you for your comments and open mindedness about The Chronicles of Riddick. I did work on the film as one of the editors. I was on this picture 1 year and will probably be going back for dvd work. I will offer you a little inside info... though probably nothing most movie fans don't already know. A movie this big is very political and the scheduale is always to short! I can assure you we busted our ass, but in truth when I went to the premier and saw the film I wished I had two more monthes to polish. I think everyone who worked on the filnm would say the same thing. But opening dates are opening dates polish be damned and the show must go on blah blah blah. I personly like the movie but may be a bit biased. (har dee har har) To me it's a popcorn movie with a cool edge although it did get a bit waterd down for the kids. To those of you who don't make up your own minds about movies, hey...... go see Garfield. Many thanks

Action figures hit the streets tomorrow
For those of you that don't have to wait four months to get your free ones from The Mercs site like some of us, tomorrow is your day. Make sure to crowd into Toys R Us as soon as they open, boss the staff around, and shove the kids out of the way so you can grab every figure off the shelf. Remember, an unopened box in your mom's basement is better than little Johnny having his very own Riddick doll to dice up Spidey or The Hulk. As always, make sure to call around first before heading to the store.

Weekend box office estimates
Well, looks like the final take is going to be somewhere around $24-$25 million for THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, as the film comes in second behind the latest HARRY POTTER. I'm no expert, but I can't imagine that this is a particularly strong outing for the film. It will be interesting to see what kind of dropoff it has next weekend.

So I was wondering...
I'm debating whether to open up the news section (the part you're reading right now) of this site to spoilers, so until I decide I'll keep things general... I watched the movie yesterday, and during the very end scene I thought to myself, "Hey, this was in the very first teaser. How DID they manage to avoid giving the whole thing away?" Check out the cap below (click thumbnail for a larger version)... notice anything or anyone missing?

Riddick Returns TODAY
Welcome to June 11th, the day that THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK opens across the US in 2759 screens.

Been a long wait so I'm planning on seeing it early and often, and suggest you do the same. Vin Diesel's starpower and PITCH BLACK's performance on DVD are what convinced Universal Studios to go with David Twohy's ambitious pitch, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the PG-13 result compares to the truly excellent first movie. It will also be interesting to see if TCOR is successful enough to greenlight the next two Chronicles that Twohy has planned. Riddick is a great character... as we head into the next nine days that will decide the fate of the franchise, let's keep our fingers crossed for all the people that worked so hard to get this thing into theaters.

New TV Spots!
New tasty goodness up on the official site, and if you're really feeling up to it then here are some direct download links. Pretty sure each one of these is just under 4 MB. Lots of stuff on TV
News items from The Mercs! Who would have ever thunk it? The fanpimps got word of a bunch of CHRONICLES media showing up on the box today, including [a.] A piece on CNN airing today (Thurs), [b.] a piece on MTV news today (Thurs), and [c.] a piece on the TV GUIDE CHANNEL. I'm sure everyone appreciated me waiting until 10:30 at night to post this.

I also spotted a clip that played during the Vin appearance on the MTV beach thing that showed the complete scene of Riddick saving Kyra from the sunrise while climbing the cliff on Crematoria. And word has it on the Mercs board that there's a 90 second clip on SciFi where Riddick kills a guard in the Crematoria slam with... nah, no spoilers. And finally, the TV GUIDE CHANNEL will be showing a piece on Sunday about summer movies that will apparently have some TCOR footage.

Harry@AICN's review
Rats, I hate it when I have to retract a snotty comment, but here I go again... Despite having had a very well-documented hand in getting PITCH BLACK a theatrical release which I thought guaranteed a glossy review, Harry Knowles at Aint It Cool News has run a pretty ambivalent review of the movie instead. He really lays into Thandie Newton's performance and Holger Gross's production design. Will wonders never cease.

Twohy cut Furyan flashback; other cuts
Kristin Lehman hopefully isn't taking this news too hard... at least she got to 'appear' in ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY. The unfortunate news showed up on on the SciFi wire that Twohy removed Riddick's flashback that you can see in one of the TV spots of Shirah the Furyan, who was originally trying to 'contact' Riddick through dreams/visions. He said that there was already enough mysticism with all of Judi Dench's Aereon stuff.
There was a concern that, ... between the Judi Dench character, [Aereon,] who was a little mystical herself, and the Shirah character, played by Kristin, that there was just a little too much mysticism going on, and that it didn't allow the audience to get grounded as much as we needed them to be to go forth and enjoy the movie
Twohy also discussed his edits, including the fact that an actual director's cut would have about 15 minutes more than what the theatrical version ended up having, plus a version that was about 2hrs 50 mins at one point. It's sad when marketing gets final cut rather than the director, but I guess in this case it was inevitable.

2500 screens: TCOR screwed?
This really only goes out to all you armchair analysts that like to discuss projected box office revenue, opening weekend, and all that kind of stuff. The word this week has been pretty grim on the number of screens that Universal will be running TCOR on, with the count being pretty solid at 2500. This is considerably less than what GARFIELD or THE STEPFORD WIVES will be getting, and is a very low number for an expensive movie like this. The reason it matters of course is because the lower the number of screens, the less of a chance TCOR has of making money. No money means no C2 or C3, so if you care I suggest you think about how you're going to spread the word (assuming you end up liking it, heh). The only hope is that this week's 2500 has been an estimate, and actuals should come in today.

Two sequels planned out
Just in case you haven't heard yet, check out this SciFi Wire article where writer/director David Twohy discusses the two sequels to THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK that he has planned. These sequels, of course, will only happen if the movie that opens tomorrow has a good first and second weekend.
Universal [Pictures, which is distributing the movie,] has ... been consistent with their wanting to see how this opening weekend [box office] did, and the second weekend, because the second weekend is a key to them to gauge drop off.

Clips at Yahoo
Some tasty new footage appeared yesterday over at Yahoo. In addition to a chunk of the premiere (with the crowd chanting "Riddick! Riddick!" heh), there are also eight new segments from the movie, in Real Player or Windows Media.
  • "Battle Over Helion Prime" -- War is raged between the Necromongers and the Elemental race.
  • "Lord Marshal Talks To Riddick" -- Lord Marshal (Colm Feore) attempts to entice Riddick (Vin Diesel) to join his Necromonger army.
  • "A Plot Against Lord Marshal" -- Dame Vaako (Thandie Newton) tries to convince Vaako (Karl Urban) to overthrow Lord Marshal.
  • "Necromongers" -- The origin of the Necromongers and their leader Lord Marshal is explained
  • "Aereon Talks To Riddick" -- Aereon (Judi Dench) warns Riddick (Vin Diesel) about the strength of the Necromongers.
  • "Dame Vaako Talks With Aereon" -- Necromonger Dame Vaako (Thandie Newton) threatens Elemental Leader Aereon (Judi Dench).
  • "Riddick And Kyra Talk" -- Riddick (Vin Diesel) is upset with Kyra (Alexa Davalos) for joining the Mercs.
  • "Riddick Saves Kyra" -- Riddick (Vin Diesel) risks his life by careening off a mountain to save Kyra (Alexa Davalos).
Twohy interview at CHUD
There are a billion interviews out there now, all appearing to have come from the same junket session, so I'll only be linking this one since it has a lot more 'flavor' than the rest. One of the new CHUD crew sat down with writer/director David Twohy to talk Chronicles, so check it out and learn how to pronounce the guy's name right, dammit.

Soundtrack out yesterday, Cards today
Ok, time to open the wallet again and feed your inner fanboy, because yesterday the soundtrack came out and today the trading cards are due. As always, make sure you call first before heading to the store.

Happy Lame Update Day
Real Life (tm) is nutpunching me, so no real news today (maybe, MAYBE tonight). Not that you really need me anyway... all the recent interviews can be easily accessed by Google, once in a while something cool shows up on The Mercs (new poll and trivia question, btw), and naturally the *real* fansites are always hopping over at VX and UVDFC.

Oh, and hello to the 200 people who apparently visited this site for the first time yesterday, making Monday the busiest day in PitcherBlacker.com's history. Thanks for stopping by, and make sure you help support the site by clicking the... oh, wait, I don't run any ads here :)

     June 7th, 2004
Bit Torrent for MTV footage
Bshock at The Mercs site is on the ball this morning, having posted a Bit Torrent link for the footage shown on MTV last night. Grab it if ya missed it.

My take on the MTV footage
Decided to throw together a little 'liquid cooled' editorial style commentary on the footage that showed up on MTV last night. Editorializing was a dumb enough thing to do on my old game sites when I was getting 12k visitors a day so it certainly makes no sense now, but what the hell. Click.

     June 6th, 2004
Crew Interviews
It's the UVDFC with a heads-up that Romanticmovies.about.com has a bunch of cast interviews.

Reminder: 1st 10 Minutes on MTV tonight
Pretty much just like the title says... make sure you stay tuned to MTV later on tonight, since they'll be showing the first ten minutes of TCOR. I also spotted a *fifth* TV spot on SciFi last night with new footage that none of the spots or specials have had yet, so today would be a good day to pretty much stay glued to the big square babysitter.

     June 5th, 2004
Tatopoulos concept art
While I was perusing artmaster Patrick Tatopoulos' official site I was thrilled to discover that he had posted a few images from the concept art he did for TCOR. Hit the site for about five pictures, and also some interesting stuff he did for PITCH BLACK (the predators were originally dappled like leopards).

     June 4th, 2004
IMDB final cast/character list
Well, the years of hitting the IMDB page for TCOR hoping for a single update so I can post something to this site are now over. They've apparently gotten official word from somewhere, because they've put up a totally up to date list of the cast and their character names. I suppose a few of these might be spoilers, but check it out anyway.

World Premiere pictures
The VinXPerience crew is all over the recently release pictures from Wednesday's world premiere of the movie. Hit this thread to dig into the list of links. Some serious hotness tottering down that red carpet...

Moriarty's Super Positive AICN review
As promised yesterday, Moriarty has gone to town in an overwhelmingly positive review of THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. I liked this little piece about Nick Chinlund's "Toombs":
There are more characters filling out the corners of this universe, too, like Toombs, a mercenary who is hunting Riddick when the film begins. Nick Chinlund was in Twohy’s last film, BELOW, and he’s got a real Tom Waits thing going on. He’s this great, freaky, gravel-voiced guy who plays scummy with enormous charm. Any time he and Riddick are onscreen together, the movie’s got a whole different pulse, and Twohy’s smart enough to leave Toombs in a terrible place without ever showing us what his fate is. If there are further sequels, I’m hoping Toombs manages to escape with just a few scars, because he and Riddick should definitely meet again.
JoBlo.com review and new stills
JoBlo serves up a double-fist of shiv in the form of a quick one-paragraph mostly positive review and a bunch of new stills that are making the rounds to all the sites (ComingSoon and IMDB have them too).
The movie, as a whole, is truly an epic achievement.
The reviewer also mentions sexual tension between Kyra and the twice-her-age Riddick, so that aughta give the people on the messageboards something new to gripe about :)

Bored-sounding review
Thanks to Caesar for sending along this link to a review on the Catholic News Service for TCOR. While not wholly negative, these guys give everyone from Twohy all the way down a good rogering, so take a look.
In fact, Diesel seems to grunt his way through the story, as if diction and dialogue were outside his ken. The violence is not very disturbing, shot as it is in a blurry, mostly stylized fashion with little gore. The target young male audience may find the movie exciting, but those not awed by Diesel will find it sputters.
New positive review
Frustratingly enough, Moriarty doesn't have his TCOR review up at Aint It Cool News yet, but there is a mildly spoilery one from some guy named Tron.
At first I thought I was looking at a rip-off of the art style and narrative opening of Dune. In fact the opening scenes gave me the feel of what Dune might have looked like if it was made in the early 80's with the art direction of H. G. Geiger. The narrative is well needed because you are about to be thrown into many planets and several races or groups of people of these worlds. Some of the action and different planets that you are thrown into might seem confusing at first but with the story line most of your questions will be answered.
Since I'm not going to be updating anymore today, make sure you check AICN randomly for when the real deal Moriarty has his review posted. Thanks to Lionel for the link.

Lord Marshal interviewed
First of all, you can't miss this interview even if it's to see them call Colm Feore's character Lord Marsha. This article is nice and long and does a good job detailing Feore's career and abilities, so check it out.
"David had a very clear idea of what he wanted. He brought a bunch of recognizable elements from our world and mixed it up with this fantastical science fiction plot. "Different religions, races, factions — all kinds of things that give us a sense of humanity. Its clearly not now, but its still us. No matter how remarkable these creatures are, they're still grounded in our reality. Feore shakes his head in admiration. "I have to hand it to David. It takes not only a great deal of intelligence but a truly bravura sense of style to throw all these elements together and make them coalesce."
Thanks to the UVDFC crew for the heads up.

BruceL's BUTCHER BAY first impressions
Well, I've put in maybe an hour on the game and figured I'd post some thoughts about it from a long-time PC gamer playing his first Xbox game.

Obviously the inescapable facts of console gaming are all here, with low resolution graphics, aliasing, and a controller not particularly suited for shooters. The latter item probably deserves a pass, though, since I bet those guys that have played Halo every day for the last three years are probably very adept. Customizable controls make up for it, along with a few video sliders and saving to the hard drive (I don't think you can save anywhere, but when you die and have to restart, I never had to replay large sections). I was also gratified at how many different control options you have, including leaning, rolling, loud and silent neck snaps, and 'fatality' moves. Wasn't expecting so much to be included.

The Starbreeze guys do what they can as far as render depth, using their great blowing-sand effects and nice skymaps to mask the smallish size (at least to my PC Morrowind/UT2004 playing eyes) of the outdoor areas. From what I've seen, there aren't many of these though as the bulk of the game takes place inside prison corridors. These corridors are pretty detailed, with really great lighting and texturing. As is to be expected, there is a limited amount of memory in the console so you do start to notice the same four wall decorations repeating endlessly after a while. But there are a lot of nice touches, such as damage appearing on your enemies and flies buzzing around the trash cans and stuff like that. The lighting and shadows look great, and the character models absolutely rock. Vin Diesel's likeness is really astonishing although Johns'.... isn't.

What I really like so far is that there is a very strong film-like element to BUTCHER BAY... The game opens with a pre-rendered cinematic set near the time that the movie will take place. Then you've got some in-game cinematics, a short playable level full of prescripted events, followed by another in-game cinematic and finally a partially-interactive credits sequence. Pretty cool if you're interested in becoming a part of this world. I also liked that not only do they take time to introduce some elements of mythology that we're going to get into with the movie, but we've also got great moments with Johns (any time there's new Riddick-Johns interaction, you know it's going to be a good thing). Top notch.

There are a couple things I don't like about the gameplay and quite a bit that I do. BUTCHER BAY features a pretty-blah game-ism in that there are doors that don't open until you talk to some guy that gives you a mission. It's kind of predictable and annoying. But then again, you can talk to guys and get missions (or decline them), so any adventure element at all is welcome. And although I haven't done many of these yet, it appears like there may be some choice involved, it's not like you necessarily automatically go kill whomever you're asked to off. Going to have to experiment a bit.

The game is linear, but not 100% so. You can go back and forth between at least the first two areas and explore areas that open up as you accept or decline side missions. It seems that the only times you benefit from the fact you can climb boxes and shimmy along ledges is when that's the only way the designers have given you to progress. It will be cool if there are spots later on in the game where you can do this as an OPTION if you want, maybe to avoid gunfights or whatever. So far it's pretty much on rails.

This is getting kind of long considering how little I've played yet, so I'll wrap up with the main point of the game, the fighting. It's all about shivs, blood, and inflicting brutality on others. You get a really good feel for the the force of your punches, and having a toe-to-toe fight with homemade knives is gratifyingly wicked and extremely bloody. Plus there are a lot of times where you can use stealth to snap necks for a little variety.

All in all, so far this is more fun than I would expect to have at 640x480 so fingers crossed it stays that way.

THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK premieres today
Well, this is it. Tonight at the Universal Amphitheatre, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK is going to unspool in it's finished form and mark the end of years of waiting for a pretty small core of fans and also the end of millions of man-hours of work for the filmmakers. While we want to see a good movie, it's worth noting that this is their livelihood so I hope it works out as well for them as they would like. Plus I hope they got all their effects shots completed in time!

Next week it's our turn.

Moriarty.... loved it!
While the Aint It Cool honcho is not allowed to publish his review of the film until Friday, he snuck onto a messageboard somewhere out there in the 'verse to quickly tell us that he "Loved the shit out of it." I take this as a favorable sign!

Renegade Effects Necro armor shots
Spotted some sweet closeup shots of the insanely detailed Necromonger armor pieces that the crew at Renegade Effects Group put together for the movie. Hit the link above for several pictures of gloves, a dagger, and a breastplate that ended up going unused.

Chapter 4 in the Hunt for Riddick now up
I haven't had a chance to mess with this yet, but have at it all of you. Head on over to the official site to Hunt For Riddick and get your chance to win a prop from the movie.

Major facelift of BUTCHER BAY site
VUGames sends word that they've revamped the site for the Xbox game THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY in celebration of the game's release yesterday. Got some more goods in the form of descriptions of the various enemy character types, wallpapers, and I think the same old screenshots. It looks like there will be another game trailer released sometime, and there's a code to get free shipping if you hit the messageboard.

Regal Cinemas doing midnight showings
Mhardyzgurl over at The Mercs site pointed out in a thread that the Regal Cinemas chain of theaters is going to be showing the movie at midnight on the 10th, so if you can't wait then hit their website and see if you've got one nearby.

Ask Cast/Director questions at ComingSoon
The gang at ComingSoon.net have put up a new thread to solicit questions for more RIDDICK interviews, this time with Twohy, Urban, Newton, Diesel again, and Davalos. So if there's something you're dying to know, then post it up and maybe Chuck the movie guy will ask it.

Final Mythology Decoder entries at The Mercs
If you've been following the information they've been parceling out over at The Mercs Official Fansite then you definitely want to head over and catch the final entries. Lot's 'o deadness therein.

Penny Arcade BUTCHER BAY comic
Looks like the PA guys are just as surprised as, well, just about every gamer in the world at the fact that Starbreeze managed to somehow put together a movie-licensed game that is getting extremely great reviews. You can check out the relevant strip here and their blog post about it here.

Card release pushed back
Ok, I probably should have checked their site yesterday before posting, but anyway... The Rittenhouse Archives site for the TCOR trading cards now indicates that they will be released on the 9th, two days before the movie. Sorry if I got anyone prematurely excited yesterday.

TCOR special tonight on SciFi
Just a reminder that the SciFi channel will be running a half-hour making-of "Lowdown" special on TCOR tonight after they play PITCH BLACK. Don't miss, 'n stuff. Here's their little page.

A positive TCOR review coincidentally appears
Sure I'm paranoid, but it should probably seem strange to more than one person that a big happy review of TCOR appears on Aint It Cool News the day after an item about how a source from the production indicated the movie was severely edited to remove complexity. To deepend the mystery, AICN honcho Moriarty points out in this piece that he'd heard that the rumors of large edits were incorrect, despite other AICN people defending the initial story's source over on the CHUD boards.
The story is your basic sci-fi stuff, prophecised man is unleashed upon bad guys and does what he has to do to become victorious. The twist is of course that Riddick is "another kind of evil" which is the Furyan race, and as you can tell by the name, most Furyan's aren't exactly happy campers, but they are a wickedly powerful bunch. And so continues to adventure. There is a scene on the prison planet that gave me sweaty palms, in which they have to outrun the sunlight from basically flash frying their asses.
Trading Cards available today
Start calling around to your favorite hobby shops, because somewhere out there are 3000 boxes of CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK and PITCH BLACK trading cards, just calling your name. In case this is the first time you've heard of them, Rittenhouse Archives is bringing a limited run of cards for both movies, in addition to a collector's album. Included in this set are autograph cards from the main actors of both movies. Make sure to hit the PitcherBlacker Cards section for images, a FAQ, an interview with the Rittenhouse president, and info on how to very easily get some free packs for yourself.

SciFiWire and Diesel
There's a short article with some quotes from Vin Diesel over on the SciFiWire....
Diesel said that Riddick differs in its mythology from other, similarly themed films, from Star Wars to The Lord of the Rings. "Although we've had Star Wars and we've had Lord of the Rings and we've had these great mythologies, we haven't had a mythology that has a central character, a protagonist, that is as complex as Riddick, I don't think," he said.
Gamespot gives BUTCHER BAY a 9.3
Bshock over at The Mercs site pointed out this review of ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY by Gamespot, where the game got a 9.3. This is a very high rating for that site, and coincides with almost every review the game has been getting. Since it looks to be more likely that the game hits stores today, you should probably check it out.

Quick thoughts on the DVD re-release
I managed to shoulder my way through the people looking at the boxes on the rack (seriously) and snag a copy of the new DVD for myself yesterday, so I figured I'd toss out a few comments on the new extras.

To begin with, it was nice to see that Cole Hauser was involved, as he was by far my favorite character, twist, and performance from PITCH BLACK. He narrarates two of the items here, the Johns Chase Log and then also the COR Visual Encyclopedia, and is in fine form. The Chase Log is the highlight of these pretty slim new extras, with about thirty voice entries marking his pursuit of Riddick after the escape from Butcher Bay right up to when they get onto the Hunter-Gratzner. A few little 'universe' things make their way into this, such as a semi-encounter with the rykengolls and also a competing Merc who has a run-in with Riddick... but I think that even this extra would be way boring to anyone who's not already geeked out on this stuff. The Visual Encyclopedia was disappointing, covering just a handful of elements from the universe. There is an interesting CG flyby with an undercutter and some nice TCOR concept art, but considering the mountain of stuff they must have made for the new movie it comes off feeling pretty cheap. The Introduction By David Twohy was kind of neat, mostly because you can see one of the sound guys playing some TCOR footage from the Crematoria surface fight in the background. The A View Into The Dark doc was painfully short and blah. The Game Is On trailer for the ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY game is great, lots of new footage and a new voiceover by Vin, which you won't give a rats ass about if you're not an Xbox-owning gamer. The DARK FURY featurette seems truncated, with tiny interviews with Chung and the writer, some shots of Chung's office and him at work, and no new footage. The packaging is shiny and over the top, with a cardboard slipcover designed especially for those of us that hate slipcovers. The menus are animated, and they rock.

Oh, and Vin's game production company is spelled incorrectly in the credits.

All in all, this is a fine release for someone who's never been able to pick up the Unrated version of the movie (that adds about three minutes of stuff) and is very obviously designed to plant the seeds of knowledge on THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK but not actually give you much information on it. I think it's also pretty clear that extended versions of these docs will be on the TCOR DVD.

HellHound Figures
Thanks to Sota Toys for sending along a shot of the lovely Crematoria Hellhounds (yes, yes, I know all the action figure sites had this last week. I had to wait until 6/1). Note that I had my release date wrong for the box sets that will contain these puppies... it will be July 1st when they show up in the States. Click on the image below for a larger version.

Happy BUTCHER BAY (& PB DVD) Day!
You made it, consolers! So far I don't think I've seen a single somewhat legitimate game site do anything except proclaim Starbreeze's THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY a totally great looking and kickass game, and today it hits store shelves. So get your butts out there and pick up proof that sometimes the impossible (a movie-licensed game that's R-rated and really well done) becomes possible.

The guide is out today most likely also, and of course everyone knows the new PITCH BLACK DVD re-release is too. Not going to be a cheap ride home from work, that's for sure...

Earn free tickets
Spotted on the official site that the've added a link to Movielink to earn free tickets. Because I'm on a modem, the Movielink site won't let me in to find out what needs to be done, so maybe someone could check it out and shoot me an email.

TCOR proven to be heavily edited
An article has gone up on Aint It Cool where one of their regular contributors has posted commentary indicating that THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK has been heavily edited to cut "the deep subtext that the film apparently had" because of "poor test screenings where the audience was confused." Universal's goal was apparently to "make it a popcorn summer action flick" and then just release a director's cut DVD some other time.

You can click the link above for the full quote on this painful concession to Joe and Jane Sixpack, or maybe just pop in and watch PITCH BLACK instead.

First 10 mins of TCOR on MTV
The television promotion of TCOR is going to start really heating up this week. In fact, I spotted a new TV spot yesterday with some additional footage of crowds milling around and even good ol' Imam talking about Riddick. But anyway, it looks like on June 6th, MTV will be airing the first ten minutes of THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. This should include some interesting stuff such as the Necromongers obliterating a certain planet that we'll just not mention right now to keep you spoiler-free (unless that segment has been edited out of the movie at this point too). I noticed that the crew at VX has a helpful forum thread started to track all the TV stuff, so make sure you stay tuned.

DARK FURY footage online
Cruising by the Creature Corner led me to the Total EClips site, which has a nice chunk of DARK FURY footage available in several different streaming options.

Official site updates
Well, it's as I figured... the recently released THIEF: DEADLY SHADOWS is seriously eating into my PitcherBlacker time. Ah well. Anyway, webmeister Brian Murray is at it again, with some nice new updates at the official site, including new character bios, one more of those 360 degree things for the Crematoria sled, and a large chunk of production notes. Even the site's splash screen is much tastier now.

New Vin interview
Thanks to waimeawahine for pointing me towards JoBlo's new interview with Vin about TCOR and a good chunk on his upcoming projects. Interesting tidbits include TCOR's rating, the man behind the franchises websites (Brian Murray),Vin being asked to write the foreword for the "Dungeons & Dragons" 30th anniversary, and more.

Riddick special on SciFi channel 6/2
Check your local listings as word has it on various forums across the net that this coming Wednesday SciFi will be broadcasting PITCH BLACK and then following it up with a half-hour TCOR making-of special.

New cast on IMDB
The IMDB page for TCOR was updated a few days ago to add a couple new names: Michael Benyaer as "Meccan Man" (any relation to Encino Man?) and Charles Zuckerman as "Scales".

Effects company pile on to TCOR
More digging through the IMDB reveals that there have been a ton of effects companies working on the movie, including some that we had never heard about before. These companies are Industrial Light and Magic, CIS Hollywood, and The Farm West. In addition, it looks like Pacific Title has been on board too.

RIDDICK/PB Trading Cards interview
PitcherBlacker was lucky enough to get the chance to talk with Steven Charendoff, the president of Rittenhouse Archives and the designer of the PITCH BLACK and CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK trading cards that are hitting stores and shelves June 2nd. Take a read to learn about how the cards came about, why a Cole Hauser signature isn’t included, and how to get the cards you want.

Riddick figures: production models
SOTA Toys sent along some pictures of the final action figure production models that will be appearing in stores. In addition are the first views of the Necromonger trooper and Battle Armor Riddick, along with their various weaponry. Expect shots of the Hellhound on Tuesday, June 1st.

Twohy doing FORBIDDEN PLANET?
Looks like Twohy has a nice option on the table from Dreamworks for something to keep him occupied while the Universal brass decides whether to continue the RIDDICK franchise… Dark Horizons heard a rumor that he’s in talks to direct a remake of FORBIDDEN PLANET.

Massive IGN BUTCHER BAY blowout
Those IGN guys must love the hell out of this game, and think it’s going to be huge, as they’ve tossed up a bunch of good stuff for it. Starting off, there are new screenshots, tons of huge new movies, some topping out at 60 MB, and a page with developer Pete Wanat commentary (note that some of these require you to have an IGN membership). The topper is this long article entitled “Ten Things about Riddick”, which contains “The 10 things you should know about this psycho new FPS.” Sounds really badass. Thanks to T_Mike on the CHUD forums for pointing this out.

BUTCHER BAY gameplay video
Nothing like five minutes of raw gameplay footage capped off with a shiv-fight against a dude with a penis on his shirt to get you Xboxers stoked. GameTrailers has all 36 MB of this tasty movie ready for download.

DARK FURY site goes live, plus music clip
The official website for the animated TCOR prequel is up, with a few new images and a wallpaper. Spotted that on VX. Then it was Dark Horizons with a link to a DARK FURY-related music clip.

Knife auction on Ebay
Now this isn't an official replica, plus it appears to be a bit different from the curved shiv Riddick has in TCOR. It's still The Knife, though, so get on over to Ebay and snag one for your Uncle BruceL. Two auctions are up, here and here.

TV Spots with new footage!
Battles! Ships! Christina Cox! Hotness! Credit to VinXPerience for spotting that there are three new TV Spots up at The Movie Box. I've only downloaded one so far, but it's loaded with new footage of... well, just wait for the analysis :)

Necro trooper figures!
More soon...

ADF on Johns #2
Some of you may have noticed in the CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK novelization that a Merc named Johns appears that ISN'T the William Johns that gets killed in PITCH BLACK. Well, PitcherBlacker reader Josh Miller wanted to get to the bottom of this strange issue, so he emailed the novelization author Alan Dean Foster about whether he named this particular character (remember, in the script sample I have, this character is simply called Merc #2). Foster's reply:
Johns was the name in David Twohy's screenplay. Just a coincidence, I suspect. Not an uncommon name.
Twohy, we're lookin' at you! Thanks to Josh for the email.

TCOR Screensaver
I've put together a fairly simple screensaver for fans of the latest batch of images. This consists of fifteen character stills in a slideshow, with the added bonus of not burning the movie logo and release date into your monitor like the savers from the TCOR site, heh. Click here (740 MB).

Free TCOR screening from CHUD
Head on over to CHUD.com for your chance to win free passes to screenings in Atlanta, Memphis, Nashville, and Greenville. Sweet.

Soundtrack track listing
Spoilers! Kriszta at VX spotted the track list that will be on the TCOR official soundtrack CD. There are 22 in total, and don't even think about looking if you want to stay spoiler-free for important plot points of this movie.

Trading Cards FAQ
Just a quick little page with information on the TCOR and PITCH BLACK trading cards that are coming out in a couple weeks. If you're a collector or serious fan, then signatures and cool images should be right up your alley.

New DARK FURY images, section
Next up on my list was to properly cover the animated feature THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: DARK FURY, due June 15th on DVD. Should be really interesting to see how that turns out, and all these computer backgrounds they've been releasing look really great. Hopefully the character art will match up. Anyway, I've put up a page of information here, and a page of media here.

Action Figures FAQ
I've noticed through my stats that people are very interested in the figures coming from SOTA, so I've put together a page of info for them, including how to get them for free. Check it out.

New PocketPC themes
Since my original PPC theme based on the fake poster from Japan was way more popular than I was expecting with a couple hundred downloads, I've gone ahead and made four more, all taken from the TCOR onesheet.

Vin Diesel/Riddick audio interview at ComingSoon
The ComingSoon.net guys have always been very enthusiastic about and supportive of THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, and it's netted them good stuff over the years. Now they got something better than all the stills and scoops... great information, directly from Vin Diesel himself. The CS crew conducted an audio interview with Vin (partly using questions solicited from their forum readers, whom CS was nice enough to name while asking), and Vin really let fly with the goods. I got a whopping three of my questions asked, but there's so much more... the proposed ratings for the next two movies, the general plotline for the last one, Riddick's knife fighting style, the PS2 version of BUTCHER BAY expected for Christmas, and on and on. Note that if you're Real Audio-phobic like I am, then you can hit this thread at the UVDFC for a partial transcription and easily downloadable .WAV files.

It's official: PG13
It was pretty inevitable, in my opinion, and didn't Twohy at one point even come out and say that THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK was going to be rated PG-13? Anyway, for a brief while there the film had a big fat R, but Universal's contesting (and most likely Twohy's editing of the movie) have gotten them the PG-13 that they wanted. Hopefully it will translate into the dollars that they are expecting.

If you're disappointed by this, then it's probably worth thinking about what this movie was going to be in the first place... and I don't think, on reflection, that it was going ever to be like PITCH BLACK's f-bomb dropping, gut slicing, or head chomping. Language, violence, and general R-rated darkness are only a few tools in a filmmaker's arsenal. I believe that we should have faith that Twohy and Co.'s spectacle, acting, and art direction can still tell what we already know is a pretty cool story.

5/18's new stills on the web
Sorry about the shameless attempt (admittedly partly forced by very limited available time) to make everyone sign up to The Mercs in order to see the new still images. TCOR friends ComingSoon.net have put up a page with all of these images in easily clickable format.

     May 18th, 2004
New Stills at The Mercs!
Oh, it just figures... I sit on some new stills I got from Universal to wait to make sure I wasn't blowing someone's exclusive, and they show up as a download on The Mercs. Argh. Anyway, for some really nice new shots of Kyra, Riddick, Aereon, and Vaako, head on over to The Mercs, join up if you haven't, and go to the A/V section.

PITCH BLACK FAQ and TCOR Characters updated
These seem to be visited pretty often, so updates a go-go for the PITCH BLACK FAQ/Info (mostly to add stuff about INTO PITCH BLACK) and the CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK Characters (mostly to add a sweatier picture of Alexa Davalos for all you creepy old men).

     May 17th, 2004
Starburst interview and pic
Spotted a link on Dark Horizons to a partial interview with Vin Diesel that also includes a small new still. You'll have to get the June issue of the mag for the full deal.
Well, Riddick is more of a blade man – a shiv man – probably because that’s all he’s had access to most of his life
New DARK FURY shots
It's VX this time with a bunch of cool looking new still images from the upcoming animated TCOR prequel.

     May 16th, 2004
Stills
Nothing new here (it's killing me to have some never-before-seen TCOR images that I'm pretty sure I can't post), but I figured it was high time that I put up a page of stills from the movie. Despite grumbling about every picture being of Dame Vaako or Riddick in the Necropolis, there's actually a pretty nice variety. Enjoy, 'n stuff.

Trailer screen caps
Finally got around to putting together a bunch of grabs from the most recent trailer. While some of the images are repeated from the TV spot caps, they are much higher quality. And I even spotted a wire on one of these, in the scene where Lord Marshall is punching Riddick:

VU Games guys and Vin at E3
One of the web honchos for VU Games (the publishers of the BUTCHER BAY game) posted up a quick description on the game boards of Vin's time at their E3 booth, and one of the other mods posted up a picture of the actual booth (sans Vin). They're promising more pictures, but I've been to E3 and I'm pretty sure these guys are in major pain by now... and they still have two days left!
This is guy writing from within the vug booth at the E3 show... vin is here and the crowd is HUGE!!!!

he will be playing the CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK for an hour with press and the development team here on the floor of the south hall. Then, he'll be signing autographs till four.

Tonight is the night of the big RIDDICK party at Yahoo's booth, where ABBOTT, who also stars in the game, will be there.

We'll be posting pictures as soon as we're able to upload them.

Everyone is pretty excited

ESCAPE FROM E3 STEPS
There's no doubt that this is a good E3 for ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY... one of the VU Games crew got a really sweet shot of the BUTCHER BAY cover art that was applied to a set of steps inside the LA Convention Center where the expo is held. I know Uni has bus posters and stuff, so I bet LA was crawling with Riddick this week.

When Fansites Attack!
UVDFC is continuing on their scanning rampage, leaving no page unturned in their quest to help fans avoid supporting print media, heh. The latest mags to get plundered are CFQ, Cinescape, Fangoria, and Starlog.

TROY to carry TCOR trailer
I had the extreme pleasure of catching the new TCOR trailer in front of VAN HELSING last night, and was smiling like a big nerd the whole time. As TROY is a must-see for me, I'm happy to report that per DH, I'm going to get to enjoy the trailer one more time.

Wwrath's BUTCHER BAY bonus DVD caps
Check out almost 200 screen caps of the bonus DVD that comes with preorders for the Riddick game here.

NYT BUTCHER BAY graphics article
Thumbs up to waimeawahine for passing along this link to a New York Times article about how great BUTCHER BAY looks.

UVDFC Contest with Giveaways
Take the COR Challenge over at the Ultimate Vin Diesel Fan Club, where you can ply your skills to try to win copies of the DARK FURY DVD, the two novelizations, or stuff from the UVDFC-branded webstore.

New Trading Card images
Well, if you are having a hard time waiting for June 2nd when Rittenhouse releases the PITCH BLACK and TCOR trading cards, then they have released a bunch of new card images to help tide you over. Hit the PitcherBlacker Cards section for images of the TCOR cast, PB cast, Riddick in action, and some really nice PB shots.

Complete Universe section update
Figuring it might be a fun new experience to have at least one part of this site actually up to date, I've gone through and added a bunch of new information to PitcherBlackers Universe section. Check out People, Places, and Things for notes from the book, trailers, DARK FURY, and more.

Uni fights "R" rating
Spotted at IME that THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK has been given an "R" rating and that Universal intends to appeal. Should be interesting to see how this plays out, and even if the movie is cut to get a PG-13 it's nice to know that there is a potential R-rated version waiting for DVD.

BUTCHER BAY at E3
GameSpy have posted up a quick preview of ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY that continues the impression that this game really rocks. When people toss around 'better than DOOM III' you know you should be paying attention (and maybe, I suppose, pricing Xboxes *sigh*). Anyway, congrats to the Starbreeze, Tigon, VU Games, and Uni games groups for doing the impossible and making a good movie-licensed game. Oh, new screenshots too I think.

     May 12th, 2004
New update at TheMercs site
They're keeping us busy over at The Mercs official fansite, with the latest update. The mythology decoder has added descriptions of Furyans, Half-Deads, Helion Prime, and Lord Marshal. Got a few new news items, a new poll, and an impossible new Factoid quiz which as far as I can tell you have to just guess at. Anyway, make sure you sign up so you can join the community (the forums are nicely active), and note that we're trying to pump up the chat activity so always log onto chat first thing.

High-res BUTCHER BAY screen
Got a bunch of new feature content on the way, but while I'm working on that I figured this would be something cool to chew on... One of the Starbreeze developers left a parting present for Riddick fans on an Xbox forum (not going to name names just in case) in the form of a sweet high-resolution ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY screenshot. Click the image below for the full deal.

BUTCHER BAY demo available NOW in June OXM mag
I can't believe there isn't massive fanfare for this spread across the official movie site, game site, The Mercs site, and in banners and everything. Seriously, playable Riddick... what the wtf? Anyway, the June issue of the Official Xbox Magazine (OXM) has a playable demo of ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY. While apparently very short (10 mins), I spotted at least one very enthusiastic player review here (scroll down), and I'm sure a bit of Google work would bring up a lot more.
Yeah, the demo is short, but it's VERY sweet. I had zero expectations for this game, but it really impressed me. The graphics are incredible, and the game seems to be just dripping with atmosphere. (Also, I have to give it credit for saying "fuck" EIGHT times in a ten minute demo, including two instances of the almighty "motherfucker." I love video games.)
and
And let me just reiterate that the graphics are even prettier than your momma. This is a fucking sweet looking game. I can't believe it's an unhyped, third-party licensed game. Acclaim, EA, Konami...pay attention. This is how it's done.
Make sure you read Slater's entire post. Oh, and thanks to whomever at VU games put together the DVD of movie and game extras you get when you pre-order ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY... they linked PitcherBlacker.com in there (and congrats to AOVD for getting a nod too).

Big game giveaway
Spotted a post by AZSue at UVDFC about a major IGN game giveaway. The prizes are an Xbox, a copy of the BUTCHER BAY game, a copy of the PITCH BLACK DVD, and two passes to see CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK.

Starbreeze speaks
Thanks to Dr. Haggard on the official BUTCHER BAY forums for pointing to this thread at Team Xbox that features a bunch of answers to player questions from Matthies Somethingorother, Lead Artist for ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY. Read the thread for the full deal, but here are a few highlights:
  • THE GAME IS GOLD! (i.e. finished)
  • no downloadable content
  • the full version is more optimized than the OXM demo
  • The gameplay is about 60% shooter, 20% stealth and 20% adventure
  • Approximately 10 hours to complete
  • 75% linear, 25% up to player
  • Would be rated a hard R if it was a movie

New Trailer!
I'll be grinding my teeth into coffee-colored dust for the next seven hours until I can get this downloaded, but a brand new CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK trailer has been released! Click here! (thanks to Lionel for the notice).

New TCOR site live
Earlier today the Official Site had changed a bit, with a new graphic, links to the trailer, a link to the teaser site, and a 'Coming Soon'. Well, soon has arrived, as the new site is officially there. More details in a bit.

Another TV spot spotted
I noticed during the Friends promos that Uni has put together another TV spot to promote the premier internet release of the newest trailer. Among shots we've seen already in the previously released TV spot, there are a few new ones (mouse select to view spoilers):
  • Riddick on his knees on the surface of Crematoria
  • Riddick's Furyian powers blasting back a ring of Necromongers
  • Riddick running through Helion Prime
  • Dame Vaako posing in the Necropolis

New TV spot spoiler analysis
Just like I did with the big teaser, I've also now put up a page that tries to place the scenes from the latest TV spot into their proper location/character/story context. Needless to say, this is all pure spoilers (and a fair bit of guesswork). Enjoy.

New TV spot screen captures
I think it's pretty obvious that someone capped that video from their TV, so it's nowhere near the crystal clear quality of the big teaser trailer we got in December. Hopefully an official release is in the works. Still, there's some nice stuff included, so take a gander at thirty-odd grabs.

Starbreeze BUTCHER BAY page up
No longer their "Unnamed Hollywood Project", Starbreeze has gone ahead and created an informational page for their game ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY. Got a couple of screenshots there that might be new.

TCOR links updated
Finally got off my lazy rear and did a big update to the links page to [a.] get in on some of that free crap they're handing out at The Mercs site, and [b.] try to cover all the players that have their fingers in the CHRONICLES now. If I left anything out, then drop me a line.

New TV spot now online
Thanks to Lionel Biu for noticing that the new TV commercial (a.k.a. the TV 'spot') has gone online at The Movie Box. Expect screen captures here soon from this 3.6 MB file.

New TV spot on the air
Starting to see mention of this in multiple places, so time to keep your eyes peeled. Apparently there is a new TCOR commercial airing here in the US, some have seen it on the SciFi channel and some have seen it on ESPN. Here's a description from someone on CHUD:
There is stuff like Riddick running through a huge battlefield (or what looks like one), some space ships fighting, Riddick with a big bloody shiv, one of the necrodudes punching and sending him flying, then Riddick fighting some sort of dog monster, then him going under a lava waterfall with that lady in his arms. Very much improved over the original trailer.
Big thumbs up for newest Official Site chapter
Now that I've managed to suck down all thirteen megs of flash movies that comprise the latest update to the Hunt for Riddick, I wanted to weigh in with a hearty endorsement. This makes up in a major way for the limp Toombs chapter, and provides a ton of information about the movie and characters, along with a few laughs such as Peter Chiang, VFX supervisor, being listed as a Crematoria inmate. Good stuff, and some really nice Flash work by the Universal webmonkeys. Make sure you check it out.

SPOILER ANALYSIS OF TEASER TRAILER
Since now that anyone who's been willing to dig into spoilers from the book and recent screening reviews pretty much knows the movie story, I figured it would be interesting to take a spin back through the teaser trailer and try to figure out just what it all is. If you're interested and aren't afraid of spoilers, then hit this page and see if you agree.

BUTCHER BAY on track for first of June
One of the Starbreeze guys, the developers behind the upcoming Riddick game, hit this thread in the game's official forums to "almost promise that the game hits the shelves on June 1st."

BUTCHER BAY site live
VU sends word that everyone should left trigger left trigger X button right joystick right trigger over to the newly launched official site for ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY. Nice little setup, very comprehensive (they link PitcherBlacker, after all), and they have a special preorder deal for a DVD strategy thinger. "What's Hell without a little fire?"

The Hunt For Riddick begins
The official movie site has been updated with the next chapter in the Hunt For Riddick.

Join The Mercs official fansite
A new Universal site has gone live, themed as being by the Mercs. Cruise on over to the link to learn a few things about the actual movie and A LOT about ways to promote it. There are a few goodies, including a store where you can buy posters and shirts and stuff plus an interesting version of the poster for download. Plus you can win free stuff, chat, and check out some cool desktop images.

IMDB reviews and Q&A with screening viewers
Despite the fact that the IMDB boards used to be wretched (I referred to them as "mental rat poison" at one point), they're totally redeemed now. Lionel Biu gave me the heads up on this effusive review, the first to mention that the effects are actually largely complete (strange that it was claimed only 3% complete effects at a slightly earlier screening, heh), there is also a pure spoilery question and answer thread. If you have a question that you want someone who's seen the movie to answer, then that is the place for you.

IGN with BUTCHER BAY goods
AZSue was nice enough to point out that IGN has played BUTCHER BAY and put up this preview. Apparently the game is good enough to leave them actually surprised:
But The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a genuine example of intelligent development and execution, from nearly every aspect -- presentation, gameplay, graphics, and sound. It's ambitious, and from what we can see, VU Games is indeed delivering. From the bottom up, this title is one of the elite examples of how to beat the crappy movie-license rap.
Read the preview and you'll see that this sounds great. I really like the little addition of miniquests in the game that allow you to unlock extras, like concept art, still images from the movie, and early demos of the game. Pretty sure these are new screenshots, too. Finally, there's an interesting list of actors providing voice talent for some characters:
  • Vin Diesel: Riddick
  • Cole Hauser: Johns (sweet!)
  • Kristen Lehman: Shirah
  • Ron Pearlman: Jagger Valance (SWEET!)
  • Willis Burks: Pope Joe
  • Xzibit : Abbott
DARK FURY trailer caps
I still can't get the thing to work, but while I'm sitting here crying like a small child, you should head over to the UVDFC for screen caps from the thing. Looks... animated.

Goodies at VX and UVDFC
I gotta go get the rugrats ready for school, but make sure to hit VX for tons of cool new stuff (congrats to K and the rest of her countrymen for joining up with the EU), and the UVDFC for an interesting piece on a bonus DVD you get when you preorder BUTCHER BAY from EBGames.

Happy 2 Year Anniversary to PitcherBlacker.com
Hard to believe that two years ago I posted up this site and the first bit of news, and now we're less than two months away from the movie being released. Thanks to the readers, contributors, and official types who have shown me that this little internet tribute to the great PITCH BLACK hasn't gone by totally unnoticed. Fingers crossed that THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK is good enough to warrant continual attention to the franchise, rather than having to... "Purge All?".

BUTCHER BAY box art
The official VU site for the Xbox-only Riddick game (*deep breath*) THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY (phew!) has a pretty detailed feature list, along with some cool looking box art.

More screening reviews
Thanks to Lionel Biu for pointing out a negative review of TCOR over on Dark Horizons (check the bottom of the page) where the reviewer apparently took away from the movie that Kyra is Riddick's girlfriend. To counter this razor-sharp analysis, I noticed another user review on IMDB.

Support RIDDICK via VAN HELSING
This'll be quick... since Universal was nice enough to support Twohy in his vision for THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, it would probably be nice for them to be able to stay in business long enough to release it. If you can find it in your heart to do it, go give 'em eight bucks and see VAN HELSING, opening wide this Friday.

Updated UK teaser description
Fingers, toes, and paired alien appendages crossed that this UK teaser description hits the net. Regular PitcherBlacker contributor Lionel Biu pointed out that the UK is getting/has gotten a new TCOR teaser, and will hopefully be providing his own description soon. In the meantime, an IMDB poster hit this thread with some goods of his own. Hot!
Hey, it's me again! I just got back to the UK and had the pleasure of seeing Kill Bill Vol.2 yesterday....its was so cool, but anyway I think I got a glimpse of a newish teaser trailer for TCOR! I say "newish" as I think it was just a international teaser trailer (i.e non-US trailer)and pretty much was the same as the previous teaser . Here is a description (it was quite quick can't remeber it all):

- Universal Logo appears, but the planet in the background is kinda purple.
- A shot of Judi Dench walking down some steps to a space cruiser (we have already seen this in a previous trailer)
- A close-up shot of the two gigantic statues.
-Then a voice over says "They are coming" (sounds like a child, I think it is Imam's child)
-There is then a shot of several men and women running from a sunrise.
-Then a shot of Lord Marshall commanding the space cruisers of a huge statue (this shot was in the other trailer).
-Judi Dench (as a voice over) says something on the lines of "They will devour and destroy us all...we need him." As she says this there is a scene with Lord Marshall telling his 'followers' to "convert or die" (seen this scene) and then a slow close-up shot of the prison (where Riddick is)
-A shot of Riddick in his cell follows and a voice over says something on the lines of "It's not my fight." (its obviously Riddick).
- Then there is some uptempo music and several shots of different scenes which include;
- a shot of the weird hyenna-porcupine guard dogs barking
- a shot of Riddick in the snow.
- a shot of a swarm of the Necromangers shooting at something.
- a shot of the space cruisers flying over a destroyed city.
- a shot of Kyra jumping and doing a spin over several people.
- a shot of Riddick spying (was in the other trailer).
-Then the TCOR logo appears and you hear Judi Dench say "consider this another test" while you see Riddick holding his knife and looking menacing.
-"Kill Riddick" says Lord Marshall (if I can remember the film right)
- COMING SOON.

And that is what I saw... it was really short about 1 min and 30 secs. I am sure it is not the trailer which is going to be connected with Van Helsing as it was not much different from the previous trailer which came out with LOTR and it does not really explain the plot. I think it was just a international teaser trailer. Anyway just wanted to share.

P.S I may have missed something out..it was real quick.
Bring on the shots of the Crematoria Hellhounds, sez I!

Load up on RIDDICK goods via Ebay
Since I noticed that some people have been able to get their hands on the advance poster through Ebay, it makes me think that at least some of these auctions are legit. If you're wanting to get some under-the-counter memorabilia before you can just walk into the store and buy it, then head on over. Watch out for bogus goods and make note of items that are pre-orders only. Here are a few choice goodies:
  • Advance two-sided US theatrical poster here.
  • CHIRASHI/mini poster (Japanese) that's supposedly fake here.
  • One of the promo cards from the Rittenhouse Archives upcoming set here.
  • Various signed 8x10 glossies (how can these be legit?) here.
  • film reel with first theatrical teaser trailer here.
TCOR sucks! TCOR rocks! New reviews.
Funny that the damn movie was screened five minutes away from where I live while I was away in Florida drinking Jack Daniels. That'll learn me. Anyway, AICN has a review from someone who says the thing is a bloated wanna-be epic who's main antagonists aren't that scary (kind of been wondering about that myself). Read the whole review, though, as the guy does admit that the unfinished state is off-putting and there are still things to like.
On the whole, the movie is dogged by uninteresting characters and an overly ambitious scope. Honestly though, with completed visual effects and judicious editing (there were some jarring moments, where the camera holds for perhaps twice as long as it should), it could be redeemed. I'd give it a 5.5 right now; serious tweaking could get it up to a 7.
On the plus side is this review from TTNMC:
Also returning from the first film is the character known as Jack. This was the young girl who emulated Riddick and pretended to be a boy. Five years later she now goes by Kira and has continued to mimic her hero by turning into a cold blooded killer. He isn't exactly thrilled by this. But it continues the theme of shading Riddick so he isn't simply a generic butt kicker. Also, I don't think I've ever seen someone taken out with fine china before.
Ok... the cup in the movie is metal. Did this guy actually see it, or just read some other reviews and make up his own? Hell, I've read the book, I bet I could make a better fake review than any of these real ones.

New York Times confirms: Xbox sucks.
Not really. In an article (check out page 2) mostly talking about DOOM ]I[, there's a quote from the EIC of Game Informer mag:
Referring to the protagonist in The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, an Xbox game expected soon from Vivendi Universal, he added: "Riddick is going to have a lot of detail. But he's going to spend a lot of time in the dark. With a bad TV image, all those grays are going to turn into nothing but blacks, and all the grays are going to be blacks."
Who said the art of copy editing was dead?

Upcoming poster images
Now the UVDFC crew are in the promo link too, with them having recieved some images that will eventually become posters. Pretty nice in an actor-centric kind of way. Click.

DARK FURY trailer... I think
The barbed suck that is streaming Windows media makes it's voice heard yet again, this time in the form of a DARK FURY video on Uni's site that for the life of me I can't get to work right. News stolen at shivpoint from VX.

Official Japanese site (or is it) updates
Well, if this is the official Japanese site like they claim to be, then it's weird that they spell "Riddick" at least three different ways and were previously using the poster that someone insists is fake. Either way, it's still a nice little site, and as an added bonus appear to be selling some sort of Riddick-branded keychain flashlight. News swiped from the UVDFC.

Tigon site updated a bit
A few new tidbits on ESCAPE FROM BUTCHER BAY have been folded, spindled, and mutilated into the Flash-heavy format required for the Tigon site. Hope you Xboxers get a little time to enjoy this before us PC gamers rise up in a bloody purge of fire and steel to rid the world of your kind. Thanks to AZSue.

TCOR Countdown on RiddickSounds
Spotted a fun thing on wwrayth's ten-times-more-comprehensive-than-mine Riddick site... a countdown to the movie. Pretty cool.

PitcherBlacker interview with poster retoucher Doug Reichert
Well, because I'm going to be out of town for a while, I figured I'd post up another interview to keep you readin'... This latest one is with Doug Reichert, who was the retoucher that worked on the CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK poster and outdoor promotional art. If you've ever wondered how those big square things magically appear on the walls of your theater, well, here's your chance to find out.
Deadlines can be difficult. There's a saying: There's never enough time to do it right, but there's always enough time to do it over.
New PITCH BLACK DVD info, menus
DVDAnswers have posted up a page that contains the specifications for the upcoming rerelease of the PITCH BLACK DVD (now retitled to THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: PITCH BLACK), along with cover art and images of what the menus will look like. It's all about the orrery! So now the question is... will Jim and Ken Wheat get information pages this time around, or will that button still not lead anywhere? Ah, the perils of WGA mediation...

Alan Dean Foster's CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK novelization in stores
Now that I have the book in my hands, I think I can officially say that the CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK train is underway. That's right, the very first piece of the puzzle should be available in large chain bookstores near you, so you can spoil almost every story detail from the movie. It's twice as fat as Lauria's PITCH BLACK novelization, and as an added bonus you find out the name of the giant statue things in RIDDICK on the very first page. Go buy ten copies so Del Rey will get someone to start writing that second book they hinted at.

PitcherBlacker SOTA Toy interview
Jerry Macaluso, President of SOTA Toys, Inc. was nice enough to answer a few questions about the process of making the figures for THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. Learn about what chain has the exclusive on the Hellhound figure, about upcoming vehicles, and what it will take to get more RIDDICK toys. Learn all this and more!

Giant-sized DARK FURY poster
It's here and it's huge! Click on the image below to take a gander at a new teaser poster for DARK FURY that shows Riddick tearing into Junner in 1275x1398 glory.

Novelization review and synopsis
Well, consider Ban Fennidi over at the ESCAPISM boards the luckiest RIDDICK fan out there right now, as she got Alan Dean Foster's novelization of the upcoming movie a week early and got the chance to read the entire thing. If you basically want to know what the movie is about, then head on over and get your fill of major spoilers. But, it should be noted, the thing sounds great.

DARK FURY images at Dark Horizons
Some cool stuff over at DH today, in the form of six images from the animated prequel DARK FURY.

CHUD on RIDDICK: $200M?
An otherwise generic update over at supersite CHUD regarding the CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK: THE FRANCHISE franchise tossed out the rumor that the movie budget has gone over $200 million at this point. Seems unlikely, but still interesting, no? Thanks to ~topaz~.

New character: Ziza
Another Canadian steps up as a member of the CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK cast, this time it's Alexis Llewellyn playing the part of 'Ziza'.

Figure info at UVDFC
AZSue passed along word that the UVDFC crew have put up some scans and a partial transcription from an Action Figures Digest article on the RIDDICK action figures. The piece talks to Jerry Macaluso, SOTA Toy president, and includes some images of the Riddick figure in progress.

Poster, Stills, Wallpaper
Thanks to Mike for the heads up on the United International Pictures RIDDICK site that has some cool stills, a wallpaper made from two of those stills, and finally a larger image of what is going to eventually end up being the official poster. Interesting to note how this poster has changed from the version at Showest. Click for largness.

DARK FURY info
VinXperience has a small image of the cover, along with some information as to what the prequel anime will be all about.

Revelle loses CATWOMAN due to TCOR
Interesting. Twohy go-to man for percussive scores, Graeme Revelle, will apparently no longer be scoring CATWOMAN due to scheduling problems with RIDDICK. Sucks to be them, but good news for us. This from Catwoman News:
Composer, Graemme Revell is no longer scoring CATWOMAN. Official reasons were not given by the studio (when the exact change took place is unknown), but we're hearing that is was possibly due to scheduling conflicts between the studio and Revell, who is currently scoring THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, which is also due out this Summer.

Another AICN review
Keep 'em coming... Thanks to Tina for spotting another Spoilery RIDDICK review by "Double T" over at
