July to December 2003

Teaser screencaps
So finally I got off my rear and put together a page of screen captures from the teaser trailer. These are from the biggest one, the fullscreen version, and there are 64 of 'um. I've also included a transcript of the various character speeches. Happy New Year.

     December 29th, 2003
Tatopoulos returns?
According to IMDB he has. The man behind the PITCH BLACK predator design is now listed as a "creature concept designer" on RIDDICK, so maybe Patrick will be bringing some of that Godzilla-designing good luck to a RIDDICK beastie that gets some nice screen time.

Yorick van Wageningen in the hay-ouse
I have no idea who this guy is, but man what a great name. IMDB lists Yorick as a new cast member playing an undisclosed character. John Doe, maybe?

Costume designers at play
Thanks to Ban from the Escapism board for sending along this link showing some anonymous RIDDICK costumers getting ready to paint the town red.

First Movie Still
Here we go, the first still photo taken during the filming of TCOR... Dame Vaako no doubt instructing Riddick as to what time Vaako leaves for work. Great dress on her... thanks to Tina and Dark Horizons for the tipoff.

Character Gallery
If you're just checking in, I've put together a page of characters so you can tie some faces with names and actors.

Teaser Caps by Seraph
I'll be adding screen captures from the fullscreen teaser to PitcherBlacker eventually, but in the meantime make haste to Seraph's caps page, which also features informed commentary for those of you unfamiliar with the various movie elements.

Fullsize Prologue Teaser Images
Looks like someone knows how to extract Flash files. Head over to this Judi Dench fansite to get copies of the art seen in the web prologue teaser in their original size and form. Very, very cool. Link courtesy of the crew at Seraph's message board.

Zakk Talks Sequel Schedules
Once again Seraph's message board comes through, this time with a quote from Diesel's production partner regarding the timing of the next CHRONICLES movies;
"We're not attempting to do a Lord of the Rings thing and have one out each year. There could be two or three years between each Chronicle."
Site Maintenance
Since I'm geeking so hard on the newly released teaser, I figured I'd harness that to clean up this ridiculously halfassed site somewhat. Updated is the messageboard page, which now directs people to the Escapism RIDDICK forum which looks to be my new home for a while (plus I added a few links to other popular forums). The TCOR links have a few more marginally useful URLs in place, and I put the end Necromonger speech from the prologue teaser on the caps page. Etc etc, also more junk along the same lines, but none worth really detailing.

Trailer!
Do not ask, just GO!

(Thanks to kocoshanel for the heads up)

Entertainment Tonight Vid, Article
Thanks to Megan, waimeawahine, and Seraph for the news that ET has put up a page that contains a video of Vin talking about and walking through some RIDDICK sets. In addition, that link leads to an article with a basic recap of what the movie is all about. Seraph has posted a board topic that has a transcription of some of the video interview discussing interesting details such as ship names and actual plot details for the next movie, heh.

More Prologue Teaser Transcription
If you let the web teaser page just sit there open for a while, you'll hear some spooky voices say some stuff that is spooky in a spooky manner. Seraph and Meg were nice enough to send me a transcription:
wondering…

wondering about us, realising that now we’re in his head

beginning to fathom the dark thought, trying to shut us out

shut down

the here and now

resisting…but vainly, so vainly

Prologue teaser transcription
Thanks to Meg and Heather for taking the time to transcribe Aereon's speech from the web teaser and send it my way. Good stuff! And Meg points out that if you sit and listen to the trailer for a bit after it's done playing, you'll hear what might be Necromonger voices at the tail end. Freak-eh!
By the superstitious they are called The Hood of the Devil. By those who lose contact with loved ones on distant worlds, never knowing why, their name is The Great Silence. By those who have seen the towering statues left behind on dead planets, they are simply called The End. But all can agree on this; they are a plague that now sweeps through the ever dwindling worlds of man.

Were they once men themselves? Are they still men? And do they think of themselves as part of the grand era they have devoted themselves to eradicating?

Kill the... (last part garbled)

Can this really be their faith? Hard to say. Even I - one of the few people to have ever encountered a necromonger and lived to speak of it - even I don't pretend to fathom them. Truly you must be a necromonger before you can understand the necromonger way.

Yet there's one thing we do know. One thing I calculate to be true. There is a balance to everything in the universe. The balance to necromonger is Furion.

How many Furion still exist? Where they might be found? If they could be compelled to act?

Well, these are the questions that the whole universe now hinges on. If you have answers, please seek me out. My name is Aereon.
Twohy Email to AICN
No big surprise here, but it looks like I was right that it wasn't just JoBlo that got word from Twohy last week regarding the trailer and web announcements. Head on over to Aint It Cool News, the site that is arguably responsible for PITCH BLACK getting a theatrical release, to check it out. No new info, but it's always fun to see someone trying to be hip.

Actually, the email did answer one question I had... the description of the teaser made it pretty apparent that there were effects shots in it, and since the movie is still so far out I was a bit suprised that any were done yet. According to Twohy, Double Negative and Hammerhead "managed to accelerate a few VFX shots just in time for a holiday peek", so there you have it.

Teaser Caps
I tossed up a quick page of screen captures from the flash trailer, if you want to just get a quick glance.

Webstuff Live!
Time for all my snide comments to stop. Sure it's slow loading (modem users note it's an almost 3MB file you have to download) and sure it's Flash, but when the voiceover is actually Judi Dench, and she actually manages to make the word 'Necromongers' sound cool, AND the first glimpse is all kickass concept art, well... I'm so extremely there. That's right, the first indication that anything is actually happening with this movie has gone live at www.pitchblack.com (also at TheChroniclesofRiddick.com, which will bring you to the same site) in the form of a really sweet teaser video of lots of great art, and Judi Dench/Aereon talking about the 'plague' known as the Necromongers.

Don't be fooled when you first see what looks like the planet survey thing from the original website, just click it for the movie to start. Surprisingly, this doesn't even mention Vin, but does give what looks like a quick shot of what might be movie footage of a ship taking off. Sweet! Also strange is that earlier this week Twohy told the JoBlo guys that this new website would allow you to do a flyby of one of the alien worlds, and as far as I can tell, clicking anywhere on the site just replays the video. Weird. Note that the 'Join the hunt for Riddick' link just replays the video.

Teaser Description
Well, whether Twohy calls it a teaser or a trailer, the good news is that it's going to actually show footage and not just a bunch of lame swooshing around the logo set to music. Dark Horizons posted up some descriptions yesterday of what the teaser (their words) will contain, and here are the highlights:
  • Aereon walking down a large desert temple stairs (though from the back she seems almost transparent)
  • giant alien statues
  • lots of combat fighting
  • women in elaborate dresses
  • some great epic army shots
  • silhouettes/close-ups of Riddick
  • someone in an almost old diving bell style design suit but the inside is filled with transparent purple light
  • the Necromonger ships are glimpsed
  • a doozy of a moment where a giant falling elaborate stone coffin/statue crushes everything in its path
  • Riddick, bound to a stone column and submerged to his waist in some sort of clear oily substance, struggles against a group of alien women who are slowly snipping off pieces of his clothes with large silver shears.
Just kidding about that last one, girls.

Anyway, like I said Dark Horizons does call this a teaser and suggests that the full trailer will be in front of VAN HELSING in May next year.

Site and Trailer
Hurrah, finally something. Joblo got the scoop directly from Twohy (which I tend to think means that many other sites will be getting the exact same scoop directly from Twohy later on today too) about some new goodies on the way.

First up, the old PB website at www.pitchblack.com is going to transform tomorrow (Wednesday) night to "take you on a fly-by of one of the worlds in the RIDDICK universe." I'm assuming this means some incredibly slow-loading Flash non-interactive thing. The official website will follow in the spring, allowing "everyone to join in a bounty hunt for Richard B. Riddick himself through the site. The person who finds him first...is invited to the film's premiere in June." None of that 'View Source' trickery, you cheaters.

And Twohy calls the thing a trailer, so hopefully it is a real trailer and not the teaser it's been referred to previously, but either way it's coming next week to "provide a sneak look at some of the other worlds and characters from the film". It'll show up on Apple.com first on Monday or Tuesday in some wretched barely discernable format, and then of course it'll be in front of the new LORD OF THE RINGS movie two days after.

     December 2nd, 2003
Teaser Imminent
Thanks again to a reacurring anonymous scooper who spotted mention on JoBlo that the RIDDICK teaser will be in front of LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING starting December 17th. Plus JoBlo mentioned that the movie is now just called RIDDICK, with no THE CHRONICLES OF, and reminds us of the June 11th release date. Let's hope the teaser is more than a black screen with a short Vin voiceover followed by some sort of "Seeing You In The Dark June 11th" tagline.

Still Here
Sure I'm still here, and hell, there's even been trickles of news here and there. Conjecture that maybe one of the two Superbowl spots Uni picked up would feature the TCOR trailer, new cast and crew (a "wire tech"? Neo, I believe!), and the end of principal photography. I think there might have even been some additional comments from Karl Urban somewhere along the way too. But mostly it looks like Universal is keeping a tight lid on the movie still, despite having brought a fair number of press out to the filming locations. Those guys can't talk for a while still, so expecially with holidays approaching for yours truly, site visitors can continue to expect updates to be slow. Happy Holidays, everone.

Production Biiiiig!
Much like a battalion of Necromongers sweeping across your planet, although A LOT friendlier towards good ol' Vin, the crew over at VinXPerience's Vin News Network cannot be stopped. They've spotted some cool new items, the first being Kriszta's grab of this article from the Vancouver Sun that basically discusses what a mammoth production TCOR is.
  • Sometimes up to 85 sculptors working on the show
  • They spent a million dollars on spray foam
  • 1500 employees
  • up to 800 extras a day
  • 5th largest BC Hydro customer
Who says size doesn't matter? This all fits in with some previous information, such as the sets being HUGE, etc. Production mgr Wendy Williams is quoted several times, interesting to finally see some of these IMDB names talking. She also points out that everything they shot was done on stage, so it looks like the days of struggling against difficult locations like Coober Pedy are behind them now. Damn, I knew I should have checked to see if BC Hydro needed some extra electrical engineers...

Cinescape prints RIDDICK
Another VinNewsNetwork scoop from DanistaBaby, this time a scan of an article from the Oct/Nov '03 Cinescape, sheds a small amount of light on more story elements. Click here

New Character name: Shirah
Kriszta spotted a post on the UVDFC forum by Westbeth who had found out about a late casting call for a female character to be named Shirah. Check out the character specifications here. Hopefully for more "teenage boys of the world... you're welcome" shots...

Vin's Makeup artist
The man behind Vin's 28 XXX tattoos, Christien Tinsley according to the IMDB, is back in action again as Vin's personal makeup artist. Get your own chest dragon at Tinsley Transfers.

Keith David on IMDB
He's made bitches out of a member of NWA, The Thing, and even Rowdy Roddy Piper... and it's looking more and more likely that Keith David is returning to the Pitch Black universe for more of the same. That's right: Abu AI-Walid, the gentle Imam who sucks at protecting kids, has appeared on the IMDB list for TCOR. Presumably this time he will be allowing young children placed under his protection to be eaten by Necromongers instead of the Pitch Black predators. I couldn't be happier!

Eomer in Empire
Karl Urban, Eomer in LOTR and Vaako in RIDDICK, spoke to Empire mag recently (despite the studio's apparent desire to avoid any type of promotion ot this movie whatsoever). Ahem. Anyway, this extremely great actor is serving up some hype pie and giving the impression that he'll be a sort of fancy, armored Johns. I suppose that if you're trying to find someone to fill Cole Hauser's shoes then you could do a hell of a lot worse than Karl Urban.
"Shooting is scheduled to end this month on David Twohy's Vin Diesel starring follow-up to 2000s sleeper hit, Pitch Black (part one of a trilogy). Yet don't expect an easy going summer fare. "It's about time we reclaimed science fiction and made it dark," says co-star Karl Urban, best known as Eomer in LOTR. "It's gotten a little candy on us lately, but we are going to flip that." While plot details remain sketchy, Urban plays "a deadly enforcer of a dark place" who spends the entire film trying to take Diesel down. "Vin is prey for my part, " says Urban. "I mean, in this film you're either the hunter or the hunted."
Novelization Done
Kudos to waimeawahine for catching the announcement on Alan Dean Foster's site that he's done with the TCOR novelization. Too bad we have to so long, although I still think it's strange that they release these things before the movie.
THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK is finished. I think it turned out rather well. Release date from Del Rey is May of next year, approximately one month prior to the release of the film.
ADF's site and the Vin News Network.

Second book update
I emailed Alan Dean Foster as to whether he was writing this second RIDDICK book for Del Rey. His reply:
Not to my knowledge...certainly not at this time.
Another vacation
Going to be gone for another couple weeks, keep sending emails, etc etc.

Set spy report and photo
Patrick Sauriol continues his fine work at Cinescape, this time with an exclusive picture and report snuck out by an anonymous on-set spy, Necromonger Joe ("Hey Joe, Whaddya Know?"). The shot is impressively blurry, showing either the inside of a Necromonger ship or a place on the set floor where a gaffer accidentally knocked over a bunch of paint cans.

The picture, of course, doesn't show much. The interesting part is the clips of the story itself that the report contains.
Our pal Joe says that what we're looking at is the inside of the Necromongers starship. Led by the Lord Marshal (Feore), the Necromongers warrior race have arrived at a planet called Helion and are in the midst of subjugating the population. On Helion is the ex-con Riddick (Diesel), hiding out from the bounty placed on his head. Little is known for sure of the Necromongers; there are reports that the Lord Marshal might be using the reanimated dead as warriors in his army.

The photo in question shows part of an old church that the Lord Marshal had relocated inside his command ship. We're told by Joe that some terrifying acts are committed in gruesome ceremonies inside this dark church including beheadings and self-mutilations.
Oh yes... AWESOME. So maybe the entire movie won't be Riddick, lightly oiled, striking poses in his tank top making almost the entire audience squeal while I roll my eyes. Bring on the living dead in space! (Thanks to waimeawahine and Topaz for pointing this out). One interesting thing... an extra on the movie had a few comments about the shot: "All the extras are catching serious flak about that picture being released. Apparently one of the necromongers took it with a cellphone."

New Cast Members, and Crew
Just a quickie from IMDB... Christina Cox, veteran of a large list of stuff I have never even heard of, will be joining the undead-bashing as Logan. The IMDB clevery lists the birthday of this mighty-fine addition to the Leo clan as "July 31, ????", heh. In addition, playing an as-yet unknown character will be Andy Thompson, most notable for not having served any jail time for his part in AGENT CODY BANKS.

It's getting a bit hard for my foggy memory, picking out new crewies from the ever-lengthening list, but I'm pretty sure the following meet the criteria:
  • Nathan Brunskill: Inferno assistant at Rhythm & Hues
  • Ryan Bailey: second unit gaffer
  • Dave Joshi: video assist operator
Note that it appears as if Inferno is some sort of graphics software that R&H uses.

Another RIDDICK book?
Thanks to a mysterious, well-dressed stranger for pointing out this link at Coming Soon. The brief article reinforces some earlier news that Alan Dean Foster will be writing the RIDDICK novelization, to be published by Del Rey, but goes on to mention that Del Rey will be also be publishing an "original follow-up novel, also from Del Rey, which continues the above stated chronicles will follow some months later." No word on whether Foster will write this second book too (the author's site doesn't mention it).

Questionable AICN coverage
Ain't It Cool News recieved a set report from someone that while confusing with it's information (does not match other things heard recently), is still commendable for tone and enthusiasm. Click Here and decide for yourself.

Reasons Why Riddick covering TCOR
Good news for anyone that ever enjoyed novafry's clever comedic touches over at Reasons Why Riddick... She dropped me a line to let me know that the site is back in action, this time with news items and various other sundries related to the upcoming movie.

     September 9th, 2003
More crew
Well, it's no surprise that taking a month off meant a bunch of new crew names appeared on the IMDB page for RIDDICK. So once again, here's a laundry list minus any commentary.
  • Christ Stanley: prosthetics applicator & special makeup effects artist
  • Luke Freeborn: set designer
  • Phil Gough: property master (second unit)
  • John Sweeney: assistant property master
  • John Bires: sound engineer
  • Jason Bayever: associate technical lighting supervisor for Rhythm & Hues
  • Tim Drnec: motion control technician
  • Alexander Vegh: previsualization supervisor
  • Lauro Chartrand: utility stunts
  • Jason Hanmer: utility stunts
  • Jeffrey C. Robinson: stunts
  • Frank Cuomo: post-production coordinator
  • Joseph Lederer: still photographer
  • Kim Olsen: key grip
  • Bob Roath: production controller
  • Kristen Crabtree Roath: assistant accountant
  • Douglas J. Stewart: armor painter
Detailed Set and Armor Descriptions?
Who knows... with the Internet the way it is, you never can really tell what's being faked or not. Despite the fact that there's just so much news about this movie released every day, I'll still take a stab at including something that could be b.s. once in a while. Credit for this item goes to waimeawahine, who checked out my older post on the Reality's Alternative messageboard and spotted some new items from someone apparently working as a Necromonger extra. Hit the forum thread link above for the detail (search for the posts by Crazdez), but here are some clips.
"...background extras are dropping out like flies, because of the long hard hours and the harsh costumes."
"There's 2 Humongous statues of a humanoid person (a god?) mutilating himself with a dagger... its pretty disturbing. There is also gold statues of romanesque war figures in different stances, standing on skulls, holding up charred crucified children on chains.. its extremely surreal."
"I've found that the captain costume is slightly different from a normal necromonger soldier costume, the captain has lots of spikey sawblade things on his shoulders and helmet, and the helmet is all onepiece with a crazy looking jawpiece covering the and most of the nose. The captains get to wear a really cool cape with octogonal scales. Its really heavy and annoying though, since you have to go up and down stairs all the time on the set. also, the captains makeup is darker, and their armor is more sliver and shiny. The regular necromonger's armor is pretty much the same without the sawblade stuff, and their helmet is open face, with a little gasmask sort of thing covering the mouth and nose."
"Vin looks same as ever, with his black muscle shirt and goggles"

Teaser in January
Nice, Dark Horizons notes that the gang is aiming to have the teaser trailer out sometime in January (which will probably coincide with my next update...).

Keith David returns!
First set report info! Halfway through shooting! Largest sets ever seen! How the hell do I title this item?!

Smilin' Jack Ruby, reporter for ubersite CHUD, is back from his trip to the set or TCOR in Canada and released a few items of info in a forum post. I'll list a few of the most interesting bits, but definitely read the whole post.
  • His actual articles probably won't appear until closer to the movie's release next year
  • The sets are the biggest he's ever seen, bigger than PLANET OF THE APES
  • Keith David is returning, but is the only original castmember besides Diesel. Alexa Davolos replaced Rhiana Griffin as Jack.
  • It's a 77 day shoot and they're halfway through.
  • Theyre only shooting this movie now even though a trilogy is still planned.
Necromonger armor description?
Thanks to Seraph, admin of the science fiction and fantasy movie/tv board Reality's Alternative, for passing along a note that someone claiming to be an extra on TCOR posted a description of a Necromonger costume. I've included a quote, but make sure to click here for the rest of the (extremely interesting) post.
The costume looks really awesome, its like weathered midevil metal armor, with big shoulders and a really intense helmet...
Another Interesting Item from RA
After seeing the item above, I poked though some of the older posts on Reality's Alternative and found this one, which quotes a Details Magazine article...
A group of artists is going over sketches for The Chronicles of Riddick, a Middle Earth~meets~Battlestar Galactica extravaganza that may or may not be Diesel's next project, and he can't control his enthusiasm.

"Hot," he says, checking out sketches of the Trojan~style armor he might one day wear. "Those helmets are so @#%$ hot!"

Riddick may be Diesel's greatest sleight of hand (or biggest boondoggle) yet. Just this morning, Universal Pictures announced it was throwing $115 million at the project. Not bad for the first installment of what Diesel hopes will be a trilogy based on his 2000 sci~fi clunker Pitch Black, which almost nobody saw.

Around the room, the artists do their best to look attentive as Diesel commandeers the conversation, no small feat.

"I've been coming up with this concept about the origin of the Underverse," Diesel announces to nodding heads. "Imagine that the Underverse is a place where the Negative Material Plane overlaps the Negative Plane. So you're going to have a hybrid of people from the Prime Material Plane who are affected by the overlap of the Negative Material Plane, and that's..."
"almost nobody saw"? Bad gossip columnist... no Starbucks!

Slight Todd Cherniawsky correction
Todd of Asylum Design Works was nice enough to verify that the IMDB is correct about him doing TCOR set design. But he pointed out that he did some digital models too.

John Cox/Creature Workshop Pred Pics
Just in case this is new to anyone else, I spotted some cool Pitch Black images on the website for the company that did the predator puppets.

News Archived yet again
Who woulda thought I'd need to do this so damn often...

Short BruceL site vacation
FYI, I probably won't be posting anything for the next two weeks. Feel free to keep sending those emails though.

Keith David returns!
More soon...

Upcoming CHUD set report
FINALLY, some real movie information will start rolling out for RIDDICK. Waimeawahine was kind enough to point out that movie megasite CHUD is going to have a reporter on-set soon in Vancouver to cover the shooting. Check out the first chunk of this Angelina Jolie interview where Smilin' Jack Ruby commented on July 22nd:
Oy vey. The past couple of weeks have been absolutely, positively INSANE. But, it looks like it's finally slowing back down to normal - maybe (knock wood) - and I'll be approaching sanity right around the time I have to blitz out of here and head back to Vancouver for Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black 2 next week (woo-hoo!).

More Crew joins the, uh, crew
Gonna make this nice and easy:
  • William H. Orr .... special effects director (as Bill Orr)
  • Kit Mallet .... stunts
  • David J. Bowler .... assistant production coordinator
  • Lee Anne Muldoon .... publicist
  • Bruce Whidden .... color timer
Kit Mallet and Vin Diesel starring in a movie with Necromongers... who names these guys?

Interview with PITCH BLACK crew
PitcherBlacker was recently very fortunate to be able to interview someone from the production of PITCH BLACK, who really spent some time digging up anecdotes and describing how tough it can be behind the scenes. Take a look at the tribulations involved when US shipping goes on strike, flies swarm, Vin's contacts cause problems, and an underfunded production pushes it's people to the limit.

     July 12th, 2003
Alan Dean Foster to write RIDDICK novelization
Thumbs up to Topaz for passing along the ass=kicked news that Alan Dean Foster has been signed to do the novelization for TCOR. ADF has written over eighty books, including sixteen NYT bestsellers and novelizations for just about every cool genre movie I've seen.

Take a gander at the relevant update recently posted to his website.
The rough draft of THE LIGHT-YEARS BENEATH MY FEET, the second book in the upcoming TAKEN trilogy, should be finished next week. Just in time for me to start in on the first film novelization I've done since ALIEN 3. The tentative title is RIDDICK, that the astute cinema buffs among you will recognize as the sequel to the excellent small SF film PITCH BLACK. One reason I decided to do it was because the writer-director of the original film, David Twohy, is also involved in the follow-up. The film will star Vin Diesel, who first really attracted notice as a possible screen "presence" in its well-received predecessor.
Crew additions
Spotted on IMDB that Rob Young has been added as a production sound mixer, and Sharon Thompson will be slaving away as an art department assistant.

     July 7th, 2003
New Crew
On the IMDB tip today with some new art talent. Kristina Lyne is listed as a graphic designer (perhaps for screen props?) and Todd Cherniawsky joins the set designer posse. Todd was the production designer on all three movies in the GINGER SNAPS series, and served as a set designer on THE HULK and Cameron's GHOSTS OF THE ABYSS.

Oh, and happy birthday to TCOR "Vault Officer" Colin Corrigan.

     July 4th, 2003
New Cast and Crew
Wiameawahine strikes again, this time steering me towards two new cast members first spotted on IMDB. Aaron Douglas will be appearing as the cleverly named "Young Soldier", and Chris Astoyan will play "Tony Nesteravich".

While at IMDB, I also noted a new stunt double listed: Chad Bellamy. No clue who he's going to be doubling for.

More effects houses join up
Well, their websites don't say any thing (yet). But according to Cinefex, HATCH FX and New Deal Studios will both be involved with TCOR. HATCH does digital mattes (they have some amazing ones on their site from LOtR and the Scorpion King) and concept art. NDS is a visual effects production facility and is affiliated with Hunter-Gratzner Industries, who made the ship model of the same name that was used in Pitch Black.

Original PB costumes
Thanks to GT Burnette for giving me a heads up on Reelclothes.com, where they have a bunch of (allegedly) authentic costumes from Pitch Black for Sale. Anybody interested in these is urged to research the authenticity. $300 seems pretty cheap to me for a set of duds used in such a cool flick, though, so who's going to be first in line to donate so I can pick up Riddick's tank top? Cause, y'know, he's so dreamy.

     July 3rd, 2003
Rhythm & Hues on the job, and hiring
The effects house Rhythm & Hues has joined the TCOR roster, according to their website. They've got a monster list of movies in the works, and I spotted this post on CG Channel (now about a month old) showing some of the positions they were seeking to fill. Their website's Careers page is probably more updated now, though.

Title & date change #19747
VX pointed out something they spotted on Dark Horizons, namely that 'The Chronicles Of' has been dropped and the release date has been changed again to something that will no doubt change eight more times before TCOR actually comes out. Funny that the recent Universal press release retains the "Chronicles of " bit. Can I stop reporting these eternal name and date revisions yet?

Fun with speculation
So now we pretty much know for sure that Kyra is Jack from Pitch Black. Also, unlike what I originally guessed, the character of Toombs probably isn't a Slam City guard but is more likely a guard in the Helion prison.

And finally, what about the fact that the press release identifies Kyra as the ''sole survivor" of the events in Pitch Black? Sounds like Twohy kills off the Imam early (probably to avoid having to pay Keith David, heh). I know it's way dumb to base speculation on race, but could it be that the black actor Ron Selmour was cast so early because they knew they would need someone to act out Imam's demise?

We have plot!
UPDATE: Never forget you can always count on Krista at VinXPerience... or at the very least, one of the members of her Vin Army. Sure enough, the info below originally spotted on ComingSoon did indeed come from a press release, and VX has the full text (scroll down). The pr reveals some new info over and above the plot summary, too.

ORIGINAL UPDATE: Ah, the lovely gents (dames?) at Coming Soon are first out of the gate with what is most likely info from a Universal press release, finally divulging details about TCOR. Here's a direct clip:
Riddick has spent the last five years on the move among the forgotten worlds on the outskirts of the galaxy, eluding mercenaries bent on collecting the price on his head. Now, the fugitive finds himself on planet Helion, home to a progressive multicultural society, which has been invaded by the Lord Marshal (Colm Feore), a zealot who targets humans for subjugation with his army of warriors known as Necromongers.

Exiled to a subterranean prison where extremes of temperature range from arctic nights to volcanic days, Riddick encounters Kyra (Alexa Davalos), the lone survivor from an earlier chapter in his life. His efforts to free himself and Kyra lead him to the Necromonger command ship, where he is pitted against the Lord Marshal in an apocalyptic battle with possibly the fate of all beings-both living and dead-hanging in the balance.
Hrm. "both living and dead".

I like it.
