III. DIRECTOR'S CUT ANALYSIS (Spoilers)
DELETED (scene): “Never been so fuckin’ popular”
Somewhere around here after the Mercs escape the planet, Twohy dropped some footage that starts with a shameless first shot of a closeup of Christina Cox’s breasts and transitions into the Mercs all in cryosleep. I think it occurred right before showing Riddick sitting there with the VO talking about how he has “never been so fuckin’ popular” and he should “open up a few throats”. Other than the distractingly shameful pandering first shot, this might be the only removal in the Director’s Cut that I didn’t appreciate. I kind of liked Riddick’s dialogue here, but oh well.
ADDED (scene): Logan ‘hotness’ scene
Instead we have what is admittedly a nice tradeoff. Logan wakes up with a start, pulls herself out of the cryosleep cradle, and goes over to Riddick. She sort of sniffs her way up his body, really close, and then there’s an OTS (Riddick) shot of her face and she does… something, with her hands, down low. Hot, man. Reason #2 behind the redone Crematoria fight to get this disk. Anyway, then she pulls up Riddick’s goggles, he opens his eyes and she tries to pull back, he catches her with his legs, says some stuff that a lot of girls probably wish Vin Diesel would say to them, then lets her go.
It’s all about the *abs*, people. Gotta love them movie stars.
ADDED (shot): Riddick pushes goggles back on
Just a little insert, in between the Mercs getting ready to land on Crematoria, of Riddick leaning up to push his goggles back against the ceiling. Nice that they remembered this so there was continuity with the rest of the sequence.
EXTENDED (scene): Slam boss explaining how the system works
When the Mercs and the Slam guys are all first in the control room talking, there’s a bit of an extension where the boss talks about how the slam system works, with The Guild paying Slams to keep prisoners and all that. More background, universe-type stuff that I’ll have to add to that part of this website now.
CHANGED (shot): Riddick’s backflip blur gone
I know it was in the trailers because it was annoying, and I *think* it was in the theatrical version because I was similarly annoyed, but when Riddick drops down off the rope with a backflip, the weird blur effect is nowhere to be seen. Unfortunately it’s still there when he pulls out the swingblades later on, but oh well.
ADDED (shot): Riddick dreaming of Lord Marshal on Furya
This one’s quick; Lord Marshal in armor framed by a doorway, flames in the background.
ADDED (scene): Vaako and Dame Vaako talk using the Quasi-Deads
More conspiring via the Quasi-Deads on Vaako’s frigate and back on the Basilica. The Purifier eavesdrops. Dame Vaako smooches one of the Q-Ds. A good addition, as the theatrical version only had one scene on the frigate which made that location get kind of short-shrifted.
ADDED (scene): Riddick’s shower and The Guv
Twohy probably couldn’t bring himself to shoot a shirtless shower scene with Vin, so the girls in the audience lose out. Rather, he kinda washes himself a bit in a waterfall, then the camera pulls back and we see that Kyra and the Guv are both watching him. The Guv provides a small bit of personal background, about how he’s been in prison so long that he can’t even remember what his wife’s name was, etc.
This bit with the Guv is really small, but in my eyes it’s critical. It had bugged me that in the book we have enough scenes to actually flesh out the character AND establish that he’s some sort of prison leader but in the theatrical version he gives this big long speech when Riddick appears and then really does nothing else but be by his side for the rest of the time. This little extra bit along with one more later on, while perhaps in Twohy’s eyes doing something to the pacing, actually gives a reason for this character to be around.
CHANGED (dialogue): “unnatural life”
Ok, I can’t remember WHERE, but somewhere in the slam sequence Twohy added back in this recurring line about “rest of your unnatural life” when referring to staying at the Crematoria slam. The Guv says it first, somewhere, then Riddick says it back to him later when talking about escaping.
DELETED (scene): Toombs and Logan watch the thermometer climb
Now, I’ll have to watch this part of the movie again to really nail the order all this comes in, but for the review it doesn’t matter. What DOES matter is that when the guards raise the control room to change out the prison air, the shots are all gone of Logan and Toombs watching the thermometer rise to 700 degrees immediately before the VTF hits. This in my mind is a critically important removal, because what it did in the theatrical version was absolutely, positively establish that Riddick and Kyra would have been dead after the rope rescue. As they jump off the rope the VTF shoots up, and the scene with Logan and Toombs had shown that the air would have been 700 degrees right at that spot, therefore flash-frying them and making action figures pointless. It was a cool scene on it’s own, but a good cut that I’m a little surprised and pleased got made!
EXTENDED (scene): Control room fight and Logan’s last(?) words
I think this is a bit longer, but I can’t remember the exact order of thirty shots all cut into a fourty-second scene. One thing I know for sure is that Twohy added in a small exchange as Riddick walks by Logan where she’s lying near the door to the sled. He bends down to grab the keys to his cuffs off her, and she looks at him and says “You going to kill me?” He just stands up, looks at her, and walks away.
